The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Marcus Freeman just had a very long and very public failed courtship of Jame Blanchard from the Texas Tech Red Raiders for the GM position. With Blanchard, I felt like I had a fairly good understanding of who he is and how he likes to do things.
With Martin… I don’t. I get it — the elevation of the Detroit Lions over the last four years is a great way of looking at this, but I still don’t personally know enough about him to have a strong opinion (surprise — it happens from time to time).
I will say that I think this is a much different direction than keeping Chad Bowden on staff or even hiring James Blanchard. As we all read between the lines a little bit, it sounds like Notre Dame will have the GM position but definitely be supplementing the position with more people to provide better scouting and player development.
