More freshmen playing time
Marcus Freeman held his weekly press conference to wrap up the Miami game and begin to move on to the Louisville Cardinals.
There are a couple of injury updates this week as tight end Cooper Flanagan will be out, and defensive end Joshua Burnham is still questionable.
Cornerback Jaden Mickey will take a redshirt for the rest of the season and will enter the transfer portal. The junior cornerback still has plans to graduate from Notre Dame in the spring.
“Everybody’s gonna have an opinion, myself included. But it’s not our opinion that really matters. Jaden Mickey made a decision that he felt was best for him. So for me to do anything other than support him, it’s selfish. I’m not in his shoes. I don’t know what’s going on in his life. This is what he said is best for him and his future, so it would be selfish of me to have selfish thoughts and opinions about the decision he’s making.
“I wish him the best of luck. I love him. He’s a great young man that’s been through a lot. He’ll go and do great things. It’s not our position or anybody else’s to make an opinion about what type of decision Jaden Mickey made. It’s a decision that he wanted to make for him, and I support him in his next endeavors.”
So where do the depth charts sit?
OFFENSE
Although he isn’t listed on the depth chart, we may see a bit more of Davis Sherwood at tight end this week with Flanagan’s injury. Other than that — we will see pretty much the same offensive personnel against Louisville as we saw against Miami.
DEFENSE
It feels like both Karson Hobbs and Leonard Moore were creeping up on more and more playing time anyway, so Jayden Mickey’s departure may not affect much on the field — although it does take away from having experienced depth.
