What is the latest on the Georgia quarterback room? Well, the simple answer is that they have some who left, they have a whole lot of youth, and two of their old quarterbacks made a lot of news last weekend.
Mike Bobo Update?
Buck Belue led Georgia to a national championship in 1981. He currently is an Atlanta sports radio personality and hosts his own podcast. On Friday, Belue got plenty of clicks when he reported on his show that Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo was planning on stepping down due to health reasons. That sent the message boards and social media flying, trying to speculate who Georgia might pick to replace Bobo. Conflicting reports have since come out that, in fact, Bobo isn’t going anywhere. One would be hard-pressed to see Smart make a change. Bobo and Smart have been long-time friends, and he has done good but not great in his return as the Bulldog play-caller. The running game, though, has definitely been missing under Bobo, and the offense just seemed to lack any real punch in 2024. For now, Bobo is still in charge of the offense, and Belue has back-tracked his statement, talking about how much “respect” he has for Bobo’s work. Stay tuned…
The Georgia Quarterback Room
Two in the Portal
The Georgia quarterback room lost two players to the Transfer Portal. The most prominent loss was Carson Beck. Beck had initially decided that he was going to forgo his remaining eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft. A call from his girlfriend and allegedly a few dollars from the Hurricane collective helped Carson change his mind and take his talents to South Beach. Beck was a very good quarterback for Georiga in his two years as a starter. He never had much of a running game, and the team basically had to rely upon his right arm to throw their way to victory. For whatever reason, he never really seemed to be embraced by the fan base.
The fans quickly embraced Gunner Stockton and his F150 when Georgia announced that Beck’s season was done after suffering a UCL injury in the SEC Championship game. Beck’s production and leadership will be difficult for Stockton and Georgia to replace in 2025. In addition to Beck, Jaden Rashada also decided to leave Athens and put his name in the Transfer Portal. Rashada came to Georgia after spending last year as a partial starter at Arizona State. There has been plenty of sizzle around Rashada’s talent, but more about his alleged NIL deal gone wrong with the Gators than what he has produced on the field. Still, his experience would have added to a rather young and inexperienced Georiga quarterback room in 2025.
Current State
Stockton will enter Spring Ball as QB1. Stockton performed well in his two key appearances to help close out Georiga’s season. He came in the SEC Championship game and added a jolt to the Georgia offense. His grit and ability to tuck the ball and run brought a new element to the Georiga offense. He performed well against Notre Dame in Georgia’s Sugar Bowl loss. There were a handful of throws that he just missed on, either behind a receiver or too high. But, Stockton showed that he has the grit to continue to develop and take Georgia to the next level.
It is what is behind Stockton that poses trouble for Georgia. Freshman Ryan Puglisi came in last winter from Avon Old Farms in Connecticut. Unlike Dylan Raiola, he was the quarterback who stayed in the 2024 class for the Dawgs. Puglisi was a pleasant prospect in high school, ranked as a four-star, but was not quite in the same stature as Beck or Stockton. It was telling, though, that Pugilisi was set to come in for the game-winning handoff at the SEC Championship before Beck stepped in. Puglisi had passed Rashada on the depth chart, forcing him to hit the Portal. Perhaps Puglisi will continue to grow and develop and show himself ready to lead the Dawgs in the years to come.
Incoming freshman Ryan Montgomery will join Puglisi and Stockton in the Georgia quarterback room. Montgomery comes to Athens from the Buckeye State and was a highly-saught recruit in the 2024 cycle. The young quarterback tore his ACL during the season and will be working his way back from his injury this spring. He should push for a backup role in the fall. With all the youth, Smart may have to look to the Transfer Portal for extra support.
Georgia Quarterback Portal Wishlist
Georgia’s quarterback roster is young and inexperienced. The Transfer Portal offers limited options for experienced starters who could step in as mentors. Below are the top three players currently available—also the only ones ranked in the Top 100 according to 247’s 2025 Transfer Portal rankings. (Hint: Waiting until spring might be a better move…)
- Devin Brown (Ohio State): The number 33 ranked quarterback in the Portal is the highest-rated quarterback available. Has sat for three years at Ohio State. He completed 11 of 20 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in 2024.
- Aidan Glover (Missouri): Ranked 45th overall, he was a four-star quarterback coming out of Tennessee last year. He did not make the stat sheet for the Tigers in 2024.
- Kai Hornton (Tulane): If there is one player that makes sense for depth on the list, it’s Horton. The redshirt junior is ranked 59th on the list. He saw action in 2021 and 2022 as a freshman and sophomore for the Green Wave. He played in only one game in 2024.
