
A weekend to forget for both the men’s and women’s teams.
The Northwestern men’s tennis team took on Vanderbilt and Clemson in a clash over the weekend. The Wildcats were happy to return home to Evanston after a series of disappointing losses.
First-year Carter Pate scooped up the first singles win of his collegiate career versus the Commodores on Friday, defeating opponent Pablo Martinez Gomez in the first and third sets, 6-4, 6-4. Another Wildcat deserving of headlines on the weekend is Felix Nordby, who beat his opponent in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Nordby improves to 4-1 in his dual singles matches.
Northwestern dropped the doubles point and the rest of their singles on Friday, adding another loss to their campaign. After a Sunday loss to Clemson, the Wildcats have dropped five in a row for the Wildcats and now sit at 2-5.
The Wildcats hope to defend their home court at Combe Tennis Center where they will host a doubleheader against Illinois State and IU Indy this Saturday.
The Northwestern women’s tennis team didn’t fare much better than the men. They faced a No. 1 ranked Georgia, No. 4 ranked Stanford and a No. 15 ranked Pepperdine, dropping all three matches in the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships, which took place in Evanston.
On Friday, The Bulldogs hopped off to a hot start against the Wildcats by securing the doubles point. Although the ‘Cats won the first matchup, 6-2, thanks to Sydney Pratt and Erica Jessel, they dropped the next two matches 6-3 and 7-5, giving Georgia the lead.
In singles action, the Bulldogs continued their dominant success, winning every single one of their matches. The Wildcats didn’t win a single set against the Georgia side.
The Wildcats were back on the court on Saturday, taking on No. 4 Stanford. Pratt and Jessel were once again able to secure the doubles point, winning their set 6-2. Kiley Rabjohns and Neena Feldman provided a helping hand in winning the doubles point, winning their set 7-5.
In the singles action against Stanford, the Wildcats didn’t enjoy as much success. The Stanford side won three matches in singles play to secure the win but Pratt helped the Wildcat side by winning her sets, 6-4, 6-3.
To wrap up the weekend, Claire Pollard’s squad matched up against No. 15 Pepperdine on Sunday. Pepperdine stole the doubles point from the Northwestern side despite a win from Kiley Rabjohns and Feldman.
In the singles portion of the match, Northwestern secured only one victory against Pepperdine’s three. Feldman was excellent on the day, winning her match in the No. 6 position quite comfortably. Ultimately, Pepperdine won the matchup against the Wildcats 4-1.
Northwestern, now 4-4, hopes to bounce back this weekend at home. After the disappointing showing, the Wildcats will take on UIC and Milwaukee in a Sunday doubleheader.
