With standout performances at elite events and exciting tournaments on the horizon, the ‘Cats are ready to hit the ground running this spring.
Northwestern men’s and women’s golf teams are gearing up for the second half of their seasons, which will resume in a month following both teams’ winter hiatus. Despite the pause in team competition, both programs have made headlines, with two men’s players participating in the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational and three women’s players earning invitations to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Below, I’ll take a look at those achievements and preview the second half of the season.
Men’s Golf
Over the weekend, senior Cameron Adam and junior Daniel Svärd represented Northwestern at the Jones Cup Invitational, one of the premier amateur golf tournaments. The invite-only event drew an elite field, featuring 43 of the world’s top 100 amateur players.
Svärd, competing in his second Jones Cup, showcased remarkable progress from last year, where he tied for 50th. This time, the Swedish native delivered an outstanding performance, finishing in a tie for sixth at 1-under par across three rounds. He was one of only seven players to finish under par, an impressive feat given the strength of the competition. Svärd’s consistent play included 10 birdies and rounds of 72, 72 and 71. Adam also turned in a strong showing in his first Jones Cup appearance, tying for 12th at 3-over par with rounds of 74, 72 and 73. The senior carded six birdies and continued to build on what has already been an excellent season.

Looking ahead, Northwestern, currently ranked 27th nationally, is set to resume its season with a dual match against Michigan State in Florida on February 1. Following that, the Wildcats will travel to La Quinta, California, for The Prestige at PGA West, held at the same venue hosting this week’s PGA Tour event. From there, the team will head to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, for The Hayt, followed by tournaments in Palo Alto, California, and Charlottesville, Virginia. Postseason play will kick off with the Big Ten Championships, where the ’Cats will aim to secure a spot in the NCAA Regionals.
NU is well-positioned for a strong spring season and a deep postseason run. The team is led by Svärd, ranked 34th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), and Adam, ranked 73rd. Northwestern ended the fall season on a high note with back-to-back victories at the Links Collegiate in St. Andrews and The Clerico in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Alongside Svärd and Adam, the team boasts a talented core that includes Niall Shiels-Donegan and Ethan Tseng, both of whom will be integral to maintaining the team’s momentum as they return to competition in February.
Women’s Golf
While the Northwestern women’s golf team didn’t compete this weekend, they made headlines with some exciting news. Two current Wildcats, Lauryn Nguyen and Elise Lee, along with incoming recruit Arianna Lau, earned invitations to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA), one of the most prestigious events in amateur golf. Each year, only 72 players from around the world receive this coveted invitation, and this honor underscores the elite talent within Northwestern’s program.

Nguyen, ranked 51st in the WAGR, and Lee, ranked 105th, have been key contributors to the team’s success this season. Meanwhile, Lau, currently ranked 43rd, will join the ‘Cats next year and promises to make an immediate impact. The Hong Kong native is the current No. 1-ranked amateur in her country and captured four tournament titles last year on the amateur circuit. Widely regarded as a top-tier talent, Lau will further bolster an already talented Northwestern roster.
Looking ahead, the ninth-ranked Wildcats will resume their spring season in early February at the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic, followed by the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Florida. A marquee event awaits in March with the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, which will be broadcast on Golf Channel. The regular season will close with the PING/ASU Invitational and the Silverado Showdown, two tournaments Northwestern won last year. Postseason play begins at the Big Ten Championships in Maryland, with the NCAA Regionals set for early May.
After placing second, third and fourth in their first three tournaments this season, the ‘Cats have their sights set on continued success. Led by Lauryn Nguyen and Ashley Yun, and supported by a deep lineup that includes Elise Lee, Dianna Lee and Hsin Tai Lin, Northwestern has the talent to contend for an NCAA Championship. The team will aim to start the spring season on a high note and carry their momentum into the postseason.
