A strong showing for the ‘Cats early into the fall slate.

After Northwestern’s strong play at the Remenyik ROC/RJCC in mid-October, the ‘Cats continued their schedule with the Northwestern Fall Duals against Wellesley on Oct. 27 and the two-day Western Invitational in San Diego starting Nov. 2.

Against Wellesley, the ‘Cats dominated, riding high to a 24-3 victory inside Patten Gymnasium.

In the foil, Northwestern went 9-0, with Yejine Lee and Yukari Takamizawa both going 3-0 against their opponents. Brianna Ho went 2-0, while Ophelia Tong snagged a win in Northwestern’s clean sweep.

In the epee, NU continued to blast past the Blue. Athina Kwon and Amanda Pirkowski were unbeaten in each of their three appearances while Christina Liu’s 2-1 record helped Northwestern to an 8-1 victory.

Kailing Sathyanath similarly went 3-0, helping the ‘Cats to a 7-2 victory in the sabre. Alex Chen and Amy Lu both won two of their three appearances in the weapon, helping the ‘Cats sweep all three events.

To begin November, Northwestern traveled to San Diego for the Western Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. The ‘Cats faced five schools on the first day of competition, before three more matchups on Nov. 3.

On Saturday, the ‘Cats went 4-1 over their five competitions, including an impressive 20-7 victory over No. 10 Ohio State. The ‘Cats dominated the sabre and epee matchups against the Buckeyes, taking 8-1 victories in each of those weapons. The Wildcats also slinked past Tufts, Incarnate Word and UCSD on the opening day of competition.

Northwestern’s lone loss of the day came against No. 1 Harvard. Even then, the ‘Cats pushed the Crimson to the brink, taking the foil and epee events 5-4. Yet a 6-3 loss in the sabre, helped Harvard escape with a 14-13 win. Nonetheless, impressive signs from Northwestern early on its season.

On Sunday, Northwestern continued its strong play with a 2-1 day. It started out tough with a 17-10 loss to Stanford, but the ‘Cats responded with a 24-3 win against Brandeis and 20-7 victory over Air Force. Against the Judges, the ‘Cats went 7-2 in the sabre, 8-1 in the foil and a clean 9-0 sweep in the epee to get back in the win column. Against Air Force later on, the ‘Cats took 6-3 victories in the foil and epee, and an 8-1 win in the sabre.

Northwestern will be back in action Nov. 8 in Louisville, Kentucky for four days of competition at the November NAC.
