The 2024-25 Patriot League Rookie of the Year is coming to Evanston.
Another transfer is on his way to Evanston.
On Saturday, Holy Cross transfer guard Max Green committed to Northwestern, as reported first by On3’s Joe Tipton. Green is Northwestern head coach Chris Collins’ second get from the portal, as former USF guard Jayden Reid transferred to the program last week.
Green, a 6’6 freshman from La Grange, Kentucky, has three years of eligibility remaining. During his sole season with the Crusaders, he averaged 14.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game on 41.9% shooting (38% from three-point range) — a showing that earned him Patriot League Rookie of the Year and third-team All-Patriot League honors.

Coming out of high school, 247Sports ranked Green as a three-star recruit. He averaged 32.1 points per game as a senior at Oldham County High School, leading the state of Kentucky in that stat category during the 2023-24 season. It didn’t take long for him to have a similar scoring impact collegiately, as he dropped 25 points and seven rebounds on a 58.3% clip in his third NCAA game — an 82-75 win over Sacred Heart.
Green started all 31 games he appeared in for Holy Cross, leading his team in starts, as well as points and minutes per game (34.3). He was the only freshman Crusader to start more than 15 games. Arguably his most impressive performance of the season came against Virginia on the road, where he tallied 16 points, two rebounds and two assists and tied UVA’s Dai Dai Ames as the game’s leading scorer.
Holy Cross finished the season with a 13-19 record, finishing 10th out of 10 teams. It was eliminated from postseason contention with a 69-68 loss to Lafayette in the first round of the Patriot League tournament.
With Green’s transfer, Northwestern will have one more scholarship spot available on its roster for the 2025-26 season, assuming junior forward Nick Martinelli withdraws from the 2025 NBA Draft and returns for his senior season. The Wildcats now have a plethora of young players with eight members of next season’s roster being freshmen or sophomores.
However, despite nabbing two transfer additions, Northwestern still lacks an experienced big man with Matt Nicholson graduating and Luke Hunger entering the transfer portal. In addition, Youngstown State transfer center Gabe Dynes, one of Northwestern’s portal targets, also committed to USC on Saturday. If the Wildcats don’t land in the portal, they may have to rely on 6’11 incoming three-star freshman Cade Bennerman, the tallest player on NU’s roster next season.
