Teuvo Teravainen Signs New Deal
As another one of Carolina’s large free agent list this offseason, 29-year-old Finnish winger Teuvo Teravainen is now locked up. Teravainen came into the league as a Chicago Blackhawks first-round pick in 2012. He won the Stanley Cup with them in 2015. Following another season in the Windy City, Teravainen came to Carolina as part of a salary dump deal that also sent Bryan Bickell to Raleigh in exchange for some draft picks. Since that trade, Teravainen has played the rest of his NHL career with Carolina and done fairly well.
His career high in points came in 2021-22 when he scored 65 points. But this last season was his career high in goals when he put up 25. This was in conjunction with 28 assists in 78 games played. Teravainen is a winger with a high hockey IQ who can play in all situations. He can play top-line minutes at 5v5 as well as a secondary scoring role. In addition, he can be very effective on the power play as well as the penalty kill. Over the last few years, he developed good chemistry with fellow Finn Sebastian Aho. This was at 5v5 but also on the penalty kill.
What This Means
For Teuvo Teravainen, getting signed eliminates the uncertainty of free agency. He can now move forward. Even though he is more of a veteran at age 29, he still should have a few good years in front of him. His high hockey IQ and playing style could help his longevity.
But for the Chicago Blackhawks, they get to have a player with the qualities mentioned above. He can move up and down the lineup and help in any situation. He also could be a good mentor for any younger players coming up as he tends to be quieter and has more of a “lead by example” type persona. Either way, Teravainen still has good to bring to the team and can be very effective.
