RFA Alex DeBrincat Signs New Contract with Detroit
In 450 career games, DeBrincat posted 187 goals and 186 assists, good for 373 career points to date. Last season, he scored 27 goals and 39 assists (66 total points) across 82 games. The winger, 25, first entered the league after being drafted in the second round, 39th overall, in the 2016 entry draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.
DeBrincat posted an 11.1% relative Corsi percentage last year, slightly above his average. In a career that has seen very little team success thus far, DeBrincat holds tons of potential. He spent most of his time in Chicago until this past season. However, his tenure in Chicago started after their Stanley Cup Championship-winning era ended. The new contract, though, reflects DeBrincat’s knack for goal-scoring.
In just nine playoff games so far, DeBrincat netted six points (two goals, four assists). He averages 18:17 in ice time per game over his career and stands as a solid top-six winger with first-line potential.
What this Means for the Future
The Senators remain a team on the rise, and DeBrincat a potential all-star at the NHL level. He scores at right around a point–per-game pace, at least when playing his best. If a team surrounds him with other strong talent, his potential ceiling goes way up too. That looked obvious when playing with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews early in his career.
Now, the new contract takes DeBrincat into his prime years of his career. Already a proven goal-scorer at the NHL level, he hopes to re-gain his former production levels. With two 40-goal seasons already under his belt, he could very well hit 50 at some point in his career. His team certainly hopes that happens sometime (or multiple times) over the life of this contract.
