The Bears are in free-fall after four straight losses
Losers of four straight games, the Chicago Bears are teetering dangerously close to spiraling into a tailspin.
Good thing the schedule is going to get a lot harder!
But seriously, as it things weren’t bad enough, the defense isn’t getting better and Matt Eberflus is going to remain the head coach.
At least the offensive coordinator change helped get things going a little bit.
Only so much can change in the middle of an NFL season and while Thomas Brown unlocked some of that, I don’t know how much it’s going to help the rest of the way.
The power rankings reflect where the Bears are. The strange thing about it is that just over a month ago the Bears were flirting with the top 10 in most of the rankings.
Now, they’re solidly in the mid-20s in most.
22. Chicago Bears (4-6) Previous Week: 21 For Bears fans, it might feel like a nightmare. For the rest of the NFL, it just seems like a bad comedy. Chicago continues to lose games in ways only NFL scriptwriters could dream of. First, it was the Hail Mary loss in Washington. On Sunday, it was a blocked field goal with time expiring. The good news is that rookie quarterback Caleb Williams looked to be back on track after an offensive coordinator switch last Monday.
22 (21) Remember when Chicago was playing like a well-oiled machine a month ago and was in position to control its fate in the NFC playoff race? Since then, this defense has lost its winning edge, and the offense has totally lost the plot, leaving rookie quarterback Caleb Williams to shoulder the majority of the blame for this season going off the rails. After firing offensive coordinator Shane Waldron last week, though, the Bears gave Williams freedom to create plays as a runner and work through his progressions in the passing game. The result was the best performance from Williams in a month, even if the Bears did ultimately lose to Green Bay on a blocked field goal attempt in the final seconds of the game.
Williams’s strong performance allows us to focus on head coach Matt Eberflus more clearly. He botched the end of the game by playing for a long field goal instead of attempting to run a few plays to set up a shorter kick. This team needs to hit the reset button, and quickly.
23. Chicago Bears (23): Changing offensive coordinators ended their touchdown drought at 25 possessions, dating to their Hail Mary loss at Washington. But Da Bears will need a Hail Mary to reach postseason given they play what is – by far – the hardest schedule (.729 opponents’ winning percentage) in the league over the final seven weeks.
23. Bears (No. 21; 4-6): Bad news is they lost. Good news is the offense is better. Worst news is look at the upcoming schedule.
22 Chicago Bears (22) A head coach with better game management skills would have led a win on Sunday. Matt Eberflus continues to sink. At least Caleb Williams looked much better after a necessary change at offensive coordinator.
22 Chicago Bears (21) The change at offensive coordinator helped get it going, but a loss is a loss. Caleb Williams was better, which is a good thing.
