Heavy is the head that wears the crown. It is Patrick Mahomes and the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs’ world, and the rest of the NFL world is just living in it. That much is clear when, even as they head into an offseason with work to do, rivals like the Denver Broncos are talking about catching up during their season-ending press conferences.
Broncos Owner Put Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs on Notice Before Texans Game
Broncos Gunning for Chiefs
Greg Penner stirred the pot during his season-ending presser, noting how close his Broncos – which he purchased in 2022 – were to being 2-0 versus the Chiefs this season.
The Chiefs won the first meeting in Week 10, blocking Broncos kicker Wil Lutz’s field goal try.
The Broncos won the second game in Week 18, and the Chiefs’ decision to rest their starters certainly played a big part in that. Still, asked if he had Mahomes and the Chiefs in his sights, Penner spoke candidly.
“Absolutely,” Penner told reporters on January 15. “We could’ve very easily been 2-0 against the Chiefs this year, and our absolute going next year is to win in our division.”

The Broncos made the postseason for the first time since 2015.
The Chiefs are in their night straight, the seventh with Mahomes as QB1. However, they do have a win over the Chiefs in 2023 in their back pocket to boost their confidence. And there was some fortune to the Chiefs’ win in Week 10.
Still, being “close” is subjective, especially when considering the type of season the Chiefs had and the caliber of player that Mahomes still is.
Pete Prisco: 4th Super Bowl Makes Patrick Mahomes ‘The G.O.A.T.’
Mahomes is already in rarified air, matching legendary quarterback – and widely accepted G.O.A.T., at least of the position – Tom Brady with three Super Bowl wins with the New England Patriots before turning 28.
He can surpass Brady’s rate with a fourth Super Bowl victory. CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco believes another title for Mahomes would make the Chiefs superstar the greatest of all time.
“If they go for the three-peat and the three-peat, Patrick Mahomes is the G.O.A.T.” Prisco told the panel on “CBS Sports HQ” on January 14. “I mean, nobody’s ever done that in the Super Bowl era. And so I think if they win it, and he becomes the guy that leads him there, then he’s the G.O.A.T. I know Tom Brady fans don’t want to hear that, but that’s the reality of it.
“Plus, look how young he is. I mean, this isn’t the end either. If he does win the third one, he’s not … and he probably could have won, what, one more at least – that’s when you think about it. So I definitely think this … would make him the G.O.A.T.”
Mahomes has time, too. Brady did not win No. 4 until he was 37 years old, giving the Chiefs QB plenty of runway to secure the illustrious title. The Chiefs making and winning a third straight Super Bowl would be an NFL first, so the argument has legs.
Patrick Mahomes Raises Eyebrows Before Texans Game
Mahomes has never been short on confidence. That is easier with the hardware that he has to back it up. The two-time MVP offered a reminder with a subtle change to his profile on Instagram.
“Patrick Mahomes changed his profile pic on IG,” the B/R Gridiron handle posted on X on January 14. “Maybe just a reminder?”
