CHICAGO — A new report Tuesday sheds some light on the firing of Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.
Marc Silverman of ESPN 1000’s “Waddle and Silvy” reported Tuesday morning that players went to Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles to request to remove Waldron.
It doesn’t end there.
“There have also been a few veteran players requesting Bagent starts,” Silverman reported on social media.
In Monday’s media availability, Eberflus refused to back Waldron and teased upcoming changes, but emphatically said that Williams is still QB1.
In the Bears’ three straight wins against Los Angeles, Carolina and Jacksonville, Williams posted quarterback ratings over 100 and looked like finally “the guy” the fan base has desperately wanted since McMahon.
In the last three losses, he’s taken a big step backwards along with the rest of the offense.
It’s not entirely Williams’ fault as he’s being protected by one of the worst offensive lines in the league. After being sacked nine times Sunday, the Bears are now second to the Browns in sacks given up with 38.
Bagent, 24, started four games last season for Justin Fields looked like he had a good feel for the offensive. However, he did throw six interceptions and only beat the lowly Panthers and Raiders.
Williams and the rest of the offense has little time to try to get back on track ahead of Sunday’s start of divisional play against the Packers.
New offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will likely look to get get playmakers DJ Moore and Cole Kmet more involved.
Kickoff is at noon at Soldier Field.
