The Chicago Bears reportedly want to trade Justin Fields, but there doesn’t appear to be much of a market for the 2021 first-round pick.
On Monday, as free agency news flowed hot and heavy, Las Vegas Raiders reporter Vic Tafur of The Athletic tweeted that the team was considering acquiring Fields.
“As the market shrivels up for Justin Fields, Raiders kicking the tires on a possible reunion with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy,” Tafur reported.
Minutes later, though, news came in via Ian Rapoport that the Raiders had signed another QB, veteran Gardner Minshew.
“The #Raiders have agreed to terms with QB Gardner Minshew on a 2-year deal. He’ll compete with QB Aidan O’Connell,” Rapoport tweeted.
According to Rapoport’s colleague Tom Pelissero, Las Vegas is giving Minshew $15 million guaranteed and up to $25 million. So, with the Raiders seemingly out of the running, and the Atlanta Falcons signing Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year deal, potential landing spots for Fields are dwindling.
The Bears traded up with the New York Giants three years ago to select Fields out of Ohio State. However, after three years of uneven play, and with Chicago holding the No. 1 pick in the 2024 Draft, it seems almost assured that the Bears will be starting over with a new quarterback next fall.
Now, it’s just a matter of where Fields winds up getting a second chance.
