CHICAGO — Hall of Famer and Chicago Bears legend Steve “Mongo” McMichael died in hospice care on Wednesday. He was 67 years old.
A source told WGN News he had been removed from a ventilator in the ICU just shortly before his passing.
In Jan. 2021, McMichael announced he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He is survived by his wife, Misty, and his daughter, Macy.

McMichael was originally drafted in 1980 by the New England Patriots but played 13 of his 15 NFL seasons with the Bears.
McMichael was on the defensive line and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl championship in 1985. He accumulated the second-most sacks in franchise history (92.5) and set the club record for consecutive games played (191).
In 2024, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
