If Mike McCarthy is the choice, will you be happy?
The Chicago Bears have an extensive list of head coaching candidates. Seemingly, every Bears fan wants Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson. But if Johnson doesn’t come to Chicago and Mike McCarthy does, what would the reaction be?
Question of the Day: Would you be happy with Mike McCarthy as the Chicago Bears next head coach?
There are a lot worse coaches than Mike McCarthy, his teams are almost always in the playoffs, his career winning percentage is north of 60 and he’s won a Super Bowl. He’s also gotten fantastic years out of Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott.
But McCarthy is in his 60s and even though he’s only had a few losing seasons, most of them have come in the last seven years of his coaching career (4 losing, 3 winning). Is McCarthy the right guy for the job and would you be happy with his selection?
My answer: No. It’s probably one I could live with, but it’s not one I’d be happy with. I think McCarthy would be hired as a safe choice. I think the Bears would look at him as a guy that would get Caleb Williams going the right direction, he would most likely get the locker room more accountable and probably win some football games.
I don’t think you can rule out a John Fox-level disaster here either. Fox was also considered a safe hire with a track record of winning and everything fell apart here for Foxy. But I think most likely McCarthy gets the Bears respectable with a very low ceiling of being like the 6th or 7th seed in the playoffs and never being a true title contender.
I would be exited for Ben Johnson. I still think Todd Monken is my number two choice and my third would most likely be Pete Carroll. After that, McCarthy may be the next best answer on an extensive list that doesn’t have many exciting names on it, if you ask me.
