Former fifth-round linebacker Dre Greenlaw future is in limbo after the latest social media post. According to multiple reports, the wife of Greenlaw’s teammate and good friend, Fred Warner took to TikTok to signal the San Francisco 49ers likely to lose Greenlaw in free agency. She posted the following, “POV: your team didn’t make the playoffs and the NFL free agency is taking your best friend to another team and we are all severely unwell.” It appears 49er fans might have to embrace losing Greenlaw in March since he will be a free agent.
Unfortunately, Greenlaw won’t be earning a high-end contract with a new roster since he’s been battling injuries for the majority of his career. After Super Bowl 58, he suffered a season-ending injury that has kept him out of action for almost the entirety of the 2024 campaign. The San Francisco 49ers are in the position to make quarterback Brock Purdy the highest-paid signal-caller in league history. However, they still need to worry about extending one of their best playmakers, Deebo Samuel who is already in several trade rumors this offseason but they expect him to be back this coming Fall.
All of this spells bad news for Greenlaw’s future as the 49ers face salary cap constraints and will have to make difficult decisions. Despite that, he was selected in the 2019 NFL Draft and became a defensive powerhouse, recording 455 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits and three interceptions. Greenlaw should be a reliable depth piece for any defense looking to reinforce their linebacker group with experience.

Old-School Greenlaw
The Los Angeles Chargers are heading to the NFL Playoffs for the first time since 2018, but they might become a fierce AFC competitor if they stay healthy and make moves to improve their roster. Quarterback Justin Herbert is probably playing his best football in the league and he got several opportunities on the field to excel thanks to the monstrous defense the Chargers are constructing under head coach Jim Harbaugh. As much as Harbaugh loves running the football, he wants to win the majority of matchups with a strong powerhouse defense that won’t allow an opposing offense to score. Since Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack will become free agents no matter the outcome of the postseason, they might have to embrace signing Dre Greenlaw on a one-year deal to replace either one of them.
The chances of keeping Mack over Bosa are high given the strong history list of injuries he has. However, the Chargers have one of the strongest pass defenses with cornerback Kristian Fulton and the upcoming star Tarheeb Still, they still need some sort of pass rush in case they lose Fulton this upcoming free agency. Greenlaw might not do much but it’s worth signing him to a cheap contract that keeps the defense stabilized.
Super Bowl Chances
On the other hand, the Kansas City Chiefs might be calling themselves three-peat Super Bowl champions after the postseason. Patrick Mahomes is playing his best ball again despite a few miscues earlier this 2024 campaign but the linebacker corps has been quiet. The Josh Uche trade isn’t helping Nick Bolton on the defensive front so they’ll probably find someone cheaper. Greenlaw isn’t the first man on their mind but he could easily help Bolton next season relieve the stress if he comes back.
