The dust has barely settled on the fact that former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen has been named the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. The news should be very welcome to fans of a team that has been hungry for wins and much more frequent trips to the playoffs.
Coupled with the fact that Ben Johnson is now the team’s head coach, the Bears will see much more success in the future. If a crippling culture doesn’t rear its ugly head in the locker room, should see more wins as early as 2025.
Dennis Allen Will See a Lot of Success with the Chicago Bears
Who is Dennis Allen?
The 52-year-old Allen has been the head coach in two places, including the Saints and the Las Vegas Raiders. He was relieved of his duties by both teams after not being able to effectively turn those two franchises into winners.
The best thing about Allen is that his defenses have been very solid if not spectacular at some points. Coming into a situation like the Bears currently have right now, with several decent playmakers on defense, with some tweaks to be made here and there, Allen could find some success right out of the gate.
The defensive line is something that will get some attention this offseason. At least it better be. The Bears are going to work hard to make sure that there is a pass rusher that can complement their “best” sack artist, Montez Sweat, on the opposite side. Chicago has some options whether it’s through free agency or the draft.
However, the offensive line should come first.
What Dennis Allen Does
What is Allen known for when it comes to calling a defense? He prefers the 4-3, so we won’t have to worry about the Bears switching their base defense. That’s going to save a lot of heartache. When it comes to statistics, the defenses that Allen calls typically allow fewer points and yards to their opponents.
We should see a huge jump on defense for the Bears in 2025 with Allen at the helm. The Bears will be better both statistically and in terms of performance. If the holes on the line are filled the defense will be better. Allen should be able to come in and take care of things right away, giving the Bears a shot at being a winner.
Yet another thing that Allen brings to the Bears is the previously mentioned head coaching experience. We talked about the fact that he has been a head coach in two spots. While his time as a head coach was not fruitful, just having the experience will help him help Johnson. Johnson doesn’t have any head coaching experience so he can use the free advice. This will be very valuable and will help at some critical points during the upcoming season.
Allen’s Hire is Huge
It wasn’t entirely clear if Allen would sign with the Bears. But, as the week after Johnson’s hire went on, it became much more imminent. This will be a giant step forward for the team and should help them get on a winning track. Allen’s experience is valuable, and the coaching staff is going to be that much better with him on it. Look for the Bears to be even better on defense as a team, much more complete and well-prepared.
