LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus remained mum on plans for whether or not rookie QB Caleb Williams will play at the Buffalo Bills Saturday in preseason game No. 2, but he did say he would provide clarity as early as tomorrow.
The decision appears to hinge largely on the health of the Bears offensive line.
While Darnell Wright and Teven Jenkins returned to practice Tuesday, right guard Nate Davis did not participate in team drills Wednesday for the second consecutive day, which came after Eberflus said the veteran guard’s absence has been creating competition along the offensive line during camp.
“If a person is out for an extended period of time, then a player that’s in that position is playing very well at a starter level, then you create the competition. People say you can’t lose a job because of injury, I don’t think that’s true,” Eberflus said Tuesday.
Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron told the media Wednesday that he wants to keep Williams moving forward, regardless of who’s blocking for him, and he’s pleased with the progress displayed from Chicago’s No. 1 overall draft choice.
“His daily improvement has been great to see,” Waldron said. “He’s so competitive. He cares so much about being great, and he puts in the hard work. It’s not a surprise that each day, he gets a little bit better in some of the stuff as he grows within the offense.”
The Chicago Bears will take on the Buffalo Bills Saturday at 12 p.m. CT in Buffalo.
