The 2024 NFL season did not go according to plan for the Chicago Bears. However, the team saw bright flashes from rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Now, the Bears will turn their attention to their head coaching search. Their next head coach will need to be someone who can help develop Caleb Williams into a franchise quarterback, and Chicago has recently requested to interview two coordinators currently on playoff teams.
Chicago Bears To Interview Two Coordinators In Coaching Search
The Bears have started their head coaching search by requesting to interview two coordinators currently in the playoffs: Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
Brian Flores
Brian Flores has earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s sharpest defensive minds. After a stint as the Miami Dolphins head coach, Flores has rejuvenated the Vikings’ defense, transforming them into one of the league’s best units. Known for his aggressive blitz packages and ability to confuse opposing quarterbacks, Flores has an elite defensive mind.
Why Flores Could Be the Right Fit
Flores’ ability to instill discipline, toughness, and a defensive mindset would go a long way in Chicago. His experience as a head coach with the Dolphins demonstrated his capability to lead a team. Flores has a strong connection with his defensive players in Minnesota, and he can build that same type of culture in Chicago. Although he has a defensive background, Flores can work closely with Caleb Williams and the rest of the offensive staff to ensure his development.
Why Flores Might Not Be the Best Fit
While Flores excels defensively, his tenure in Miami revealed challenges on the offensive side of the ball, particularly in developing quarterbacks. Flores was vocal about his criticisms of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa when he was the Dolphins head coach. With Caleb Williams expected to be the focal point of Chicago’s rebuild, Flores would need to hire a strong offensive coordinator who can unlock Williams’ full potential. Without the right offensive staff, there’s a risk that Williams’ development could sputter under Flores.
Arthur Smith
Arthur Smith has earned respect for his work as the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator this season. Smith is perhaps best known for his time in Tennessee, where he crafted a top-five offense around Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry. Smith was then hired as the Atlanta Falcons head coach but was fired after three seasons.
Why Smith Could Be the Right Fit
Smith’s offensive background could be a major asset for the Bears, particularly with Caleb Williams coming in as a generational talent at quarterback. His knack for designing offenses that balance the run and pass could help Williams adjust to the NFL and take some weight off his shoulders. If Chicago is looking for an offensive-minded coach to develop Williams, Smith could very well be the guy.
Why Smith Might Not Be the Best Fit
Smith’s focus on ball control and run-heavy schemes may not fully maximize Williams’ elite talent and skills. Smith also failed to generate a winning season while he was the Falcons head coach. Pittsburgh’s offense has struggled as well this year with Smith. If Smith fails to adapt his approach to Williams’ strengths, the Bears could find themselves failing their franchise quarterback yet again.
How They Could Impact Caleb Williams
Both Flores and Smith have the potential to shape Caleb Williams’ career in different ways. Flores would prioritize building an elite defense. This would give Williams a stable foundation to thrive without the pressure of carrying the team. However, this approach depends on Flores finding the right offensive coordinator and quarterback coach to mentor Williams.
Smith, on the other hand, offers hands-on experience in working with quarterbacks, which could directly benefit Williams’ growth. Smith likes to run the ball which would take some pressure off of Williams. His offensive philosophy could provide the structure needed to help Williams succeed.
The Bears coaching search will define the direction of their rebuild. Brian Flores brings leadership and defensive expertise, while Arthur Smith offers an offensive mind and a quarterback-friendly approach. Both candidates present unique strengths and challenges, but the ultimate decision will hinge on who the Bears believe can best maximize Caleb Williams’ potential and lead the franchise back to prominence, whether it’s one of these two candidates or someone else.
