Naperville police are crediting a report of a suspicious vehicle with the arrest of a Chicago man on charges he had a concealed firearm with an extended magazine and no serial number.
The caller notified police about 9:40 p.m. Sunday that they’d observed a vehicle parked on the wrong side of the street with its headlights being turned on and off in the 1600 block of Westminster Drive, not far from Route 59 and Brookdale Road, a police department news release said.
Mason J. Davis, 18, of the 11000 block of Maplewood Avenue, was found to have fresh cannabis in plain view, and a gun was later located in Davis’ pocket, the release said. An airsoft rifle that looked like a real firearm was recovered from the vehicle, officials said.
Davis was charged with four counts of felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, one count of felony possession of a firearm with no serial number and one count of misdemeanor unlawful possession of cannabis.
He was released from custody pending his next court date, the release said.
“I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for our residents to call us when they see something out of the ordinary in their neighborhoods,” Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said in a statement.
“In this case, one simple observation and phone call led to the recovery of an untraceable gun and the arrest of the person illegally in possession of it. That’s a strong example of the good that can come from residents working in partnership with law enforcement. See something, say something.”
