Caleb Williams had been studying the Chicago Bears for weeks prior to being picked first overall last Thursday.
Williams knew the Bears were going to select him and decided to do some homework on their offense.
He’s been working with a private quarterback coach named Will Hewlett on some concepts in the team’s playbook so that he can be ready for rookie minicamp and then training camp.
“I have pieces (of the playbook). I don’t have the plays,” Hewlett said, (first transcribed by On3). “I could have the plays and would that really help because there’s so many other layers that go into having a successful football play work? But we have the basic route concepts in terms of depths and timing, and then how that matches together.”
Williams will get the plays once he reports for minicamp and then he’ll get to study them throughout the rest of the offseason.
The Bears will have a new offensive coordinator this season after they hired Shane Waldron, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks. Williams will have a good chunk of weapons available to him, including Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, and Rome Odunze.
