NEW ORLEANS (WGN) — Myles Garrett sent shockwaves through the football world Sunday, as the superstar defensive end announced he is requesting a trade from the Cleveland Browns. The question being asked by football fans in the Windy City is, does this mean Garrett could become a Chicago Bear?
Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager shot down the idea when talking to Chicago’s Very Own Jarrett Payton on media row in New Orleans Monday.
“I spoke to sources in Cleveland. They’re like, ‘We’re not trading Myles Garrett.’ So [there’s] that, but I’ve heard that before,” Schrager said. “If Myles — who is 29 years old, prime of his career, and one of the most decorated players in his generation — if he’s serious about this, they might have to entertain it. But [the] Bears? First time I’ve heard of that one.”
While Schrager poured cold water on the possibility of the Bears going after one of football’s best defenders, he was complimentary of General Manager Ryan Poles, who is expected to receive a five-year contract extension, as reported by ESPN’s Courtney Cronin.
Jarrett Payton: Have you heard anything about the Ryan Poles extension?
“I have not. I saw that today. It was reported. I haven’t confirmed it,” Schrager said. “But I do know Ryan [Poles] played an instrumental role of building this coaching staff and everyone there internally in Chicago were very happy with how this thing turned out. I think you’re all going to be very happy when you see Ben Johnson’s offense the first week.”
Schrager also addressed Poles’ performance as general manager, and how secure he thinks his job is.
“Before the Luka [Doncic] trade, we were saying the trade he made two years ago was the best trade of the century. So, it didn’t work out last year. Now, you [get] a new lease on life with a new coach. We’ll see how it goes,” Schrager said. “But if you told me he was in charge of the coaching search, and all these other teams are looking to get this great, young, offensive coach — he got him. He landed him.
“I might come off as a homer. I know Ryan [Poles] well, but I think he has done a pretty good job building a roster, and if the coaching search was on him, they did a nice job building out that staff.”
