2025 NFL Draft: Joshua Farmer Scouting Report
Joshua Farmer enters the 2025 NFL Draft as a prospect that could suit the 3-4 or the 4-3 defense’s defensive front. Some scouts in league circles see Farmer best suited as a three-technique, one-gap defensive tackle where he can use his explosive first step and natural power as an advantage, while some see him as a two-gap player who disrupts the pocket. He has the dream combination for defensive coaches when it comes to his measurable 35-inch arm length and powerful 10 1/4-inch hands. His biggest issue during his time at Florida State was his inconsistencies in his game, which can be maddening, especially with his technique, but those are correctable with proper coaching.
As an in-state former four-star recruit out of Gadsden County High School, Farmer redshirted his freshman year, steadily climbed the depth chart in his first full season at Florida State, and was named the Freshman of the Year. Farmer had his breakout season in 2023 when he was second-team All-ACC in 2023, recording 32 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble. In 2024, he followed that performance up by again recording 32 tackles, eight tackles for losses, and four sacks while being named Honorable Mention All-ACC. He is ranked No. 72 on Eric Edholm’s Top 100 NFL Draft prospect rankings.
Strengths
- Pro-ready frame with broad chest and shoulders.
- Size and strength to wreak havoc in the middle of the defense.
- Plays with good pad level coming off of blocks in playing the run.
- Has the prototypical frame to play in a two-gap system.
- Possesses powerful upper body strength that can knock back blockers in pass protection, especially with his bull rush techniques.
Weaknesses
- Lacks first-step quickness.
- Not adept at taking on lateral blocks; tends to get beaten to the spot.
- He is not good at taking on double teams due to his tight ankles.
- Needs to work on gap integrity when playing against a zone-blocking scheme.
- He needs to be more aggressive to shed blockers and make plays in his gaps.
NFL Comparison: Larry Ogunjobi, Buffalo Bills
Team Needs at the Position: Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers.
Draft Projection: Third-Fourth round
Bottom Line on Joshua Farmer
Joshua Farmer is a prospect who isn’t perfect, but he has length and the upper body strength to be an anchor in the middle of the defensive line. Farmer for now can be used as a rotational piece and as a starter in the future. He has some flaws that are coachable with his technique as he has to be better at playing zone-blocking schemes, or he may only be relegated to a third-down pass rusher. In conclusion, as his technique improves, so will his overall game in both phases.
