Savion Williams emerged as an impactful offensive player for the Horned Frogs and has a versatility that few can match. Here is a 2025 NFL Draft Early Scouting Report and film analysis on him.
Overview, Film Analysis, And Early 2025 Scouting Report Of TCU WR Savion Williams
Measurables:
- 6’5”
- 225 lbs
Player Background:
Savion Williams committed to TCU as a four-star recruit and a Top-30 WR in the nation out of Marshall HS in Texas. The 2020 graduate began his collegiate career as mainly a kick returner, averaging almost 23 yards per return. He saw very little time as a receiver and only caught one pass for eight yards. He stopped returning kicks the following season and saw a brief increase in receiving stats with six grabs for 71 yards.
His first decent season of production came in 2022 when he racked up almost 30 grabs and 400 yards with four scores as a full-time starter. Williams led the Horned Frogs in receiving with 573 yards and four touchdowns, and he saw his first action as a runner with 11 carries for 62 yards. In 2024, their entire playbook was fully opened. He caught 60 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns, ran the ball 51 times for 322 yards and six TDs, and went 3/3 passing for 22 yards and a score.
Accolades:
- Honorable Mention All-Big 12 (2023)
- Honorable Mention All-Big 12 (2024)
- Second Team All-Texas (2024)
Strengths/Pros:
Williams takes after the breakout 2022 Daniel Kwan film in that he does Everything Everywhere All At Once. He’s lined up in the backfield, at Wildcat QB, in the slot, on the outside, and in a TE position set. His tall frame and physical build allow him to use contact to win against larger defenders as a runner and jump-ball threat. He accelerates off the line and has the footwork quickness of an NFL WR. His utilization of these skills lets him make compact adjustments and adapt to defensive schemes on the fly. He settles down well against zone coverage and makes himself open early.
He’s an extremely sudden athlete who stutters and accelerates with poise and intent to change his approach against DBs to win leverage. Williams has burner speed when he straight lines and can outrun defenders to both the sideline and downfield. He’s a big play threat at any time and has the combination of size, speed, and athleticism to make things happen. His plethora of release packages and knowledge of when and how to utilize them allows him to create early space often. He’s a smart jump ball receiver, getting himself into favorable spots and running hard after the catch.
Weaknesses/Cons:
Williams needs to tweak his overall fluidity and explosiveness in functional movements to maximize his physical output. He plays at a lower speed too often and doesn’t let his superior athleticism take over. Despite his size, he gets broken down too easily against press coverage and needs to learn how to blend physicality with acceleration through his releases. He should be pushed to clean up some of the movement nuances within his routes that limit his consistent effectiveness.
Some of his routes are still very raw, using his athletic advantage to win reps rather than breaking down coverages and winning with finesse. Similar to former bigger-bodied TCU wideout Quentin Johnston, Williams has issues with concentration at the catch point. He gets caught thinking too much and will get himself caught in drop funks. His awareness and control as a blocker need work, often letting up too early and/or getting too swung around.
Potential Team Fits:
NFL Projection:
There’s no telling where Williams will end up in the NFL and how teams will use him, but it’s very difficult not to see a Cordarrelle Patterson Lite in his game. He can be lined up virtually anywhere on the field and, unlike during most of Patterson’s career, offers legitimate receiving upside. The amount of time he sees in each alignment depends on the system he gets drafted into, but should see considerable gadget reps. His skill set and projected upside make a career as a WR2 and occasional runner entirely possible, with plenty of room to improve.
Prospect Grade:
- Early 3rd Round
Film Exposures:
- 2024 vs. UCF
- 2024 vs. Kansas
- 2024 vs. Stanford
