Will Wade has had a quiet transfer portal so far for NC State. Many players from the Final Four team have since left, leaving the new hire with virtually no roster. Wade brought two players over from McNeese, but the Wolfpack have yet to find a big name in the portal. On Sunday, they finally received some good news. Michigan State guard Tre Holloman committed to NC State on Sunday, marking what the Wolfpack hope to be the first in a string of high-quality transfers committing to their school in the coming days.
NC State Gets Commitment from Michigan State Guard Tre Holloman
What Does Tre Holloman Bring to NC State?
Throw aside any numbers, Holloman brings experience on the biggest stages. Michigan State may not have made a Final Four run during Holloman’s time in East Lansing. However, the Spartans have competed for Big Ten championships and made the Elite Eight this past season. He averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 assists per game for the Spartans this past season. On an Elite Eight squad, he often didn’t get the same opportunities that he would get for the Wolfpack. Expect Holloman to take a step forward in a lesser conference for a team with lower expectations. Holloman provides a strong ball-handler next season but lacks the elite scoring that would make him an elite transfer.
Who Will Join Holloman?
Holloman isn’t an endgame transfer for the Wolfpack. They will need more help. After recruiting Quadir Copeland, a crucial player in McNeese’s NCAA Tournament upset over Clemson, Holloman provides a ball-handler. However, his squad needs serious help in the frontcourt. Their transfers don’t provide any kind of size and strength to compete against top centers in the ACC. There have been numerous rumors of centers visiting NC State in recent days. If the Wolfpack could pick up one of these prospects, that would only be the beginning. Wade received a commitment last week from a four-star high school commit, but he is also a guard. One high school recruit is a power forward, but Wade will need to find a way to add size soon to avoid major mismatches against power conference opponents.
How Far Away is NC State From Competing?
For now, pretty far. The ACC is historically bad, but there is reason for hope in the ACC. Louisville has added multiple transfers, Duke will always be good, and North Carolina should fill out a strong roster, along with Clemson. Virginia has also brought together a much stronger transfer class than the Wolfpack. They may have a chance to finish in the top half of the conference, but that would be more because of the ACC’s subpar depth than NC State’s roster.
Without a center, they won’t be able to compete with other schools’ size. Even schools like Pitt have multiple big men on the roster, which would cause serious problems for the current Wolfpack squad. Time will tell whether Wade will assemble a strong roster for NC State, but for now, Tre Holloman will be a nice addition.
