The Boston Celtics have turned their road performances into a historic achievement. Their recent 117-103 win over Memphis secured the franchise’s first-ever 6-0 road trip. This victory marked their eighth consecutive road win, pushing their away record to 32-7. With two road games remaining, Boston has a chance to match the NBA’s all-time single-season road record. The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors set the current record at 34-7. The Celtics will face the New York Knicks on April 8 and the Orlando Magic on April 9. Incredibly, the Celtics are improving despite being THE team to beat in the NBA.
Celtics Are Scarily Improving Despite Being Team To Beat
Chasing Historic Milestones
When asked why his team excels on the road, head coach Joe Mazzulla responded confidently. “I would venture to say that our guys are good everywhere,” he said.
Boston continues to dominate away from home. They have recorded 23 double-digit road wins, just one short of tying the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. They have also outscored opponents by 404 points on the road, closing in on the Lakers’ record of 430 points in a season.
Mazzulla credits consistency and mentality for their success. “Each year, you develop different strengths. This year, it just happened to be our road mentality,” he said.
The Celtics’ 32nd road win also ties them with the 1972-73 and 1974-75 Celtics teams for the most away victories in franchise history.
A Championship-Caliber Team
Celtics forward Al Horford emphasized the team’s focus and growth. “Even last year, we were good. But especially in the playoffs, we did a great job controlling the tempo,” Horford said. “It’s pretty special, the way we’re playing.”
Boston enters the playoffs as the reigning NBA champions and continues to break records. They are set to break league records for 3-pointers made and attempted in a season. Their offensive strategy revolves around high-volume three-point shooting. This improvement from behind-the-arc is astonishing considering the lengths to took their three-point shooting last year.
Unmatched Three-Point Shooting
The Celtics have taken at least 50 three-pointers in a game 36 times this season. They boast an impressive 29-7 record in those games. Against Memphis, they attempted 62 shots from beyond the arc, further cementing their long-range dominance.
“It’s just a matter of taking what the defense gives you,” Mazzulla said.
Boston became the first team in NBA history to attempt 60 three-pointers in a game five times in a single season. They have made 1,344 three-pointers this season, just 19 short of the record set by Golden State in 2022. They have also attempted 3,636 three-pointers, 85 away from breaking Houston’s 2018-19 record.
The Celtics’ Philosophy: Let It Fly
The debate about excessive three-point shooting has been ongoing for years. But the Celtics don’t care. They play to their strengths, using their deep shooting arsenal to dominate opponents.
As the playoffs approach, Boston’s ability to win on the road and shoot at a historic level makes them a terrifying force. If they continue this form, banner 19 will be within reach.
