The Chicago Bulls are signing free-agent guard Patrick Beverley for the rest of the season, according to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Beverley, a Chicago product, most recently played 45 games for the Los Angeles Lakers, before being sent to the Orlando Magic in a deal for Orlando center Mo Bamba.
Beverley has bounced around the league during his career, after being drafted by the Lakers in the second round of the 2009 NBA draft. Following three seasons overseas, he made his debut with the Houston Rockets, where he spent five seasons, four seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, and one season with both the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lakers.
Beverley is well-known around the league for his pesty defensive play style and getting into the heads of his opponents. With recent reports surfacing that guard Lonzo Ball will be out the entire season, the Bulls look to replace his defensive prowess with Beverley’s antics. The Bulls have been struggling as of late, losing six straight games heading into the All-Star break.
It seems that executive vice president Artūras Karnišovas hopes Beverley’s energy on and off the court can bring more out of a team that won 46 games last season.
With the addition of Beverley, guard Goran Dragić might be the candidate to be waived. In his age 36 season, Dragić has struggled to provide consistent shooting, which is why he’s on the roster.
