A wrong-way driver spurred a fatal crash overnight that killed herself and injured several others on Lake Shore Drive in the Hyde Park neighborhood, Chicago police said.
About 3:10 a.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old woman driving a gray sedan with two passengers was driving northbound in the southbound lane in the 5200 block of DuSable Lake Shore Drive in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The sedan struck a white sedan with three occupants traveling south. The white sedan continued forward and struck a second white sedan with one occupant, police said.
The driver of the gray sedan suffered multiple injuries and was unresponsive at the scene. She was taken to Providence Hospital of Cook County where she was pronounced dead. A female passenger in the same vehicle suffered a neck injury and was taken to the same hospital and listed in serious condition.
A male driver of the white sedan that was struck suffered a leg injury and was taken to UChicago Medicine and listed in serious condition. A front seat passenger suffered a neck injury and also was taken to the same hospital and listed in fair condition. A rear seat passenger in the same vehicle suffered multiple injuries and was taken to UChicago Medicine in critical condition. A male driver of a third vehicle involved in the crash suffered head and neck injuries and also was taken to the same hospital and listed in fair condition, police said.
The Major Accident Investigation Unit was investigating the crash and citations were pending.
