The post White Sox will not trade starting pitcher Garrett Crochet at deadline appeared first on Sox On 35th.
The White Sox have held on to one of the hottest names at the deadline.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the organization is keeping starting pitcher Garrett Crochet. The decision comes after Crochet’s camp indicated that the lefty wanted an extension before potentially pitching in October for his new club.
Crochet, 25, has already thrown 114.1 innings this season, eclipsing his previous career high of 54.1 innings in 2021. In that stretch, the first-time All-Star has gone 6-8 with a 3.23 ERA, 160 strikeouts, and a 2.42 FIP.
Crochet’s camp surprised the White Sox and suitors by saying that the left-hander would not only like to remain in the starting rotation should he be dealt, but that he’d also seek a contract extension before pitching for a contender in October. It was a smart play financially, as he ensures he gets paid and has insurance in case of overextending in his first year following Tommy John surgery. For the White Sox, however, it made things tougher as suitors faced some new uncertainty.
Based on previous reports from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, upwards of 15 teams had called to express their interest in Crochet. The Dodgers, who were one of the clear frontrunners in the sweepstakes, offered a package that was “quickly rejected” by Getz and Co. The Yankees were also told several days ago that they don’t match up, per Jon Heyman.
Now, the White Sox will allow Crochet to finish out the season as they did with Dylan Cease last year and likely explore trades once again this offseason. It’s a frustrating place to be as a White Sox fan, but for the next few months, the focus is clearly going to be on internal growth and development. There might be a few financial additions at the major league level in the winter, a new managerial search, and another potential trade of Luis Robert Jr. in the offseason. The dog days might typically be in August, but right now, expect those to be a bit extended.
This is a developing story. We will update this as more information becomes available.
