CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have traded ace starter Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox for a prospect package.
The White Sox are getting back catcher Kyle Teel, who is the 25th ranked prospect in baseball by MLB.com.
The haul also includes three other prospects ranked in the Red Sox top 15 prospects; outfielder Braden Montgomery (5th), infielder Chase Meidroth (11th) and pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez (14th).
Teel, drafted 14th overall in 2023, has done well in the minors with a .848 OPS and projects to be a good defensive catcher with a plus arm.
Montgomery, a switch-hitter, was drafted 12th overall this year and is ranked as the 54th best prospect by MLB.com. The 21-year-old weighs 220 lbs. and projects to be a power hitter with a great arm.
He didn’t debut in the Red Sox system after breaking his ankle in April. Montgomery hit 27 home runs with Texas A&M in 2024.
Meidroth, 23, likely could debut on the South Side next year after posting a ridiculous .437 OBP in Triple-A this year with 105 walks to only 71 strikeouts.
Gonzalez was signed in 2018 out of Venezuela has an electric fastball and a top-tier strikeout rate. MLB.com notes that he struggles with control and could wind up as a relief pitcher.
Crochet, who becomes a free agent in 2027, was one of the team’s bright spots on a club that broke the MLB record for most losses.
His dominate start to the season led to his first all-star selection after being converted from a relief pitcher.
The lefty boasts one of the best strikeout rates for starting pitchers in baseball and has been the subject of trade speculation all year.
