CHICAGO (WGN) — The Chicago White Sox traded for a left-handed reliever from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for a minor league prospect.
In exchange for minor-league right-hander Aaron Combs, the White Sox acquired 31-year-old left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Phillies.
Gilbert spent most of the 2024 season with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, going 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 31 relief appearances. He also pitched in six games with the Phillies, allowing three runs over 8.1 innings with a 3.24 ERA. Gilbert was acquired by Philadelphia from the Cincinnati Reds on May 7 for cash considerations.
Gilbert has gone 2-7 with a 4.23 ERA in 34 games that included 13 starts and 100 innings pitched over parts of four seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2021-23) and Philadelphia (2024). He was originally selected by the Phillies in the sixth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern California.
Combs made six appearances with the Single-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers last season, recording a 0.00 ERA over 7.2 IP, after being selected in the eighth round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Tennessee.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment.
Shewmake appeared in 29 games with the White Sox last season, batting .125 (8-64) with one home run and four RBI. He was acquired from the Atlanta Braves on Nov. 18, 2023 as part of a six-player deal centered around Aaron Bummer.
With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
