The youth movement appears to be coming in, as the Chicago White Sox have reportedly decided to promote catching prospect Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte to the MLB roster.
Quero, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the 62nd overall prospect and the 9th best catching prospect in baseball, was originally acquired from the Los Angeles Angels as the headliner in a package that brought them pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez. The Angels aggressively promoted him from the Low-A level straight to Double-A after a breakout season. It took him some time to adjust to the more advanced pitching, as his numbers regressed throughout the 2023 season. In 2024, however, he bounced back strong. Returning to the Double-A level with the Birmingham Barons, Quero posted an .822 OPS and a 145 wRC+. He also received rave reviews for his ability to call games behind the plate and game plan with the pitching staff.
He impressed the organization enough to earn a promotion to Triple-A Charlotte, where his numbers improved even more. He finished the season back on Top 100 lists, and was even added to the taxi squad to end the 2024 season.
In 2025 so far, Quero has picked up right where he left off. Through 63 plate appearances, he has held a .333/.444/.412 slash line with one home run. He has also showcased his discipline at the plate, walking in 17.5% of his plate appearances while striking out at a 22.2% rate.
Quero has always shown to be a patient hitter at the plate, consistently drawing impressive walk rates while keeping the strikeout rates respectable. A switch hitter, he is widely viewed as an offensive-minded catcher who can hit well from both sides of the plate. While his hit tool is a bit better than his power tool, he does have enough pop to hit 20+ home runs a season at his peak.
Defensively, Quero has worked hard to improve his ability behind the plate and has shown progress every year. He may not ever be more than an average defensive catcher, with fine blocking and framing skills and an average arm. If he hits the way scouts think he will, however, that will be more than enough to make an impact at the MLB level.
A corresponding move has yet to be announced, but he will likely see plenty of time behind the plate, while also having the ability to cover first base as well.
