Another day, another deal – this time with a familiar face.
According to a press release, the White Sox have brought back right-handed pitcher Bryan Shaw on a minor league deal. He will be in camp with the team as a non-roster invite.
Shaw, 36, became somewhat of a regular fixture in the bullpen during the second half of the 2023 season. In 38 games, the righty delivered a 4.14 ERA over 45.2 innings, owning a 3.87 FIP, 1.226 WHIP, and 2.35 K/BB. Over his last 18 appearances, Shaw had a rather impressive 0.92 ERA and found his way into each of the team’s final five games to close out his campaign.
Before joining the South Siders, the veteran reliever spent most of his career with the Guardians. His best years in the majors came from 2013-2017, when he posted a 3.11 ERA across 378 games with Cleveland, which included nine saves in 358.2 innings. He then spent a few seasons in Colorado, Seattle, and returned to Cleveland to throw another 135.2 innings across two seasons.
This deal now marks the third time Shaw has signed with the club over the past calendar year. The bullpen arm originally signed with the White Sox ahead of last year’s spring training, was granted his release after not making the big league club, and then re-signed after not finding a new home in the interim. He will now be looking to earn his way back into the bullpen picture in a season where the team will likely need as many arms as they can get.
After today’s agreement, the White Sox now have 70 players in camp, 30 of which are NRIs.
