CHICAGO (WGN) — The Athletics blasted the Chicago White Sox off the field today, despite the South Siders calling up one of their best prospects and reinstating their best hitter from the injured list.
The Athletics beat the White Sox, 8-0, behind four home runs from four different players and two run-scoring doubles from shortstop Jacob Wilson.
The A’s triumvirate of outfielders—JJ Bleday, Lawrence Butler and Brent Rooker—all hit home runs, along with first baseman Tyler Sodorstrom, who hit his MLB-leading ninth longball of the year.
Athletics’ starting pitcher JP Sears pitched six shutout innings, giving up three hits, two walks, and getting two batters to strikeout.
Ahead of the game, the White Sox called up prized catching prospect Edgar Quero and reinstated outfielder Andrew Benintendi from the 10-day injured list.
Quero is rated by MLB.com as the No. 6 prospect in the White Sox organization and No. 62 overall in baseball. Baseball America named him Chicago’s Minor League Player of the Year in 2024 and rates him as the Best Defensive Catcher in Chicago’s minor league system this season.
Quero was acquired by the White Sox from Los Angeles-AL on July 26, 2023, with left-handed pitcher Ky Bush in exchange for right-handers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López. He originally was signed by the Angels as an international free agent on February 26, 2021.
He was batting .333/.444/.412 with one home run, four RBI, nine runs scored and 11 walks in 15 games with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights this season.
Benintendi was placed on the injured list on April 9 (retroactive to April 7) with a left adductor strain.
Of players who have logged at least 8 games played, he is having the best year so far among White Sox hitters. Before the start of Thursday’s game, Benintendi was hitting .290/.333/.484 in 31 at-bats with two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored over nine games this season.
The only other position player on the roster putting up similar numbers is catcher Korey Lee, who was hitting .333/.412/.467 in 15 at-bats with one RBI, two doubles, and three runs scored ahead of Thursday’s contest.
Quero and Benintendi combined to go 0-5 with a strikeout against the A’s Thursday.
To make room for Quero and Benintendi on Chicago’s roster, the White Sox designated catcher Omar Narváez for assignment and optioned outfielder Greg Jones to Triple-A.
Narváez is 2-7 (.286) with three walks and two RBI in four games with the White Sox this season after his contract was selected from the Double-A Birmingham Barons on April 10.
Jones has appeared in three games over two stints with the Sox in 2025, going 0-2 with one stolen base.
Chicago travels to Boston for a four-game series against the Red Sox that starts Friday at 6:10 p.m. CT. Martin Perez is scheduled to take the mound for the White Sox, while Hunter Dobbins gets the nod for Boston.
