The Chicago White Sox held Mexican Heritage Night, presented by Modelo, on Wednesday, June 26, at 7:10 p.m. vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. The ballpark celebration spotlighted Mexico’s vibrant culture and its rich history within Chicago, sports and beyond.
The organization is dedicated to fostering an inclusive ballpark environment, providing a memorable night filled with cultural festivities, performances, and unique experiences that highlighted Mexico’s contributions to the city’s diverse tapestry.
Here’s a look at giveaways and activities fans enjoyed:
Tailgate Performances: Fans felt the evening’s energy, taking in performances by Los Pumas, a youth Mariachi group, at Gate 4, and Banda Nueva Raza and Grupo Sekta at Gate 5. Joining the festivities, a Charro performance at Gate 5 showcased traditional horsemanship, roping skills, and elaborate clothing, celebrating the artistry and heritage of Mexican cowboy culture.
BMO Local Business Mercadito: The club’s Mercadito, sponsored by BMO, showcased local Latino-owned businesses, including Kika’s Jewelry Boutique and El Churro Shop. Fans also enjoyed treats from La Michoacána Plus, a shop recently opened in Little Village and the first of its kind in the Midwest.
Jersey Giveaway: The first 10,000 fans, ages 21+, received an Aztec-inspired “Somos White Sox” jersey, presented by Modelo. The design honored Mexico’s ancient timekeeping practice.
Pregame Performances: Mariachi Monumental de Mexico and Ballet Folklorico de Chicago delivered captivating performances, showcasing traditional Mexican music and dance inside the ballpark.
Lotería Night: Hosted by Univision’s Omar Ramos, Lotería Night took place in the ballpark’s Patio before the game. A tradition in many Mexican and Mexican American households, the game offered an engaging and interactive experience for fans.
National Anthem and First Pitch: Lupita Infante, granddaughter of the iconic Mexican Ranchera singer and actor Pedro Infante, sang the game’s National Anthem and threw a ceremonial first pitch. Known for her mariachi, norteña, and ranchera music, Infante received a 2020 Latin Grammy nomination for her song, “Dejaré.”
Mexico State T-Shirt Redemption: Fans headed to Section 160 when gates opened to choose and redeem a T-shirt representing their Mexican state.
Mexican Heritage Night Party Shop: Located at Section 154, fans purchased T-shirts representing Mexico or their country’s state of choice. The shop also offered a variety of items like beads, flags, scarves, and more, allowing attendees to further embrace the festive atmosphere.
Photo Opportunities: Creating lasting memories of the night, fans took advantage of photo opportunities, including a Mexican-themed back drop at Section 133, and a Casa Modelo photo display in the left-field concourse. Fans also had the chance to meet and take photos with Luchadores from the World Wrestling Organization in Section 155.
