Tonight’s game came down to two words: Jonathan Cannon. After a strong seven-inning, one-run outing last week against the Mariners, it was up to Cannon to keep his good form going in what was only the sixth start of his career. He certainly delivered. Cannon came one out shy of a complete game. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, he ceded back-to-back base hits and, at 106 pitches, this was enough for Pedro Grifol to go to the bullpen.
Thankfully, this ninth-inning hiccup did not cost the White Sox a win, as John Brebbia retired Victor Carantini to end the ballgame. Cannon’s strong start was also enough to earn him the win.
On offense, the White Sox played the smallest of small ball tonight, scoring two runs off of two RBI groundouts from Andrew Vaughn. The offense only recorded two hits throughout the game, but Cannon ensured this was enough.
The White Sox improved to 20-54 with the win.
