A look at what happened on this date (April 26th) in White Sox history (and, no, today’s game is not on the list!):
1909, ANOTHER 1-0 WIN: Ed Hahn, the White Sox first batter of the game, scored in the White Sox second of three consecutive 1-0 wins over St. Louis at South Side Park. Hahn scored on Granny Cravath’s grounder. Frank Smith threw a two-hitter with no walks and strikeouts for the win.
1918, EDDIE COLLINS: IRON MAN: White Sox second baseman mEddie Collins set the American League record by playing in his 473rd consecutive game in a 7-6 win over the Browns in St. Louis. He broke the record – which would eventually be made famous by Lou Gehrig and then Cal Ripken Jr. — previously held by Sam Crawford.
1925, FORFEIT LOSS: The White Sox were forced to forfeit to Cleveland when the Comiskey Park crowd, confused over whether the game was over, engulfed the field and refused to leave. The White Sox were losing 7-2 in the last of the ninth when the large crowd became confused over call at first base. Thinking the game was over, the crowd – part of which was on the field as was the tradition then — took to the field. Chief umpire Pants Rowland, the former White Sox manager, couldn’t get the crowd off the field and awarded the forfeit to the Indians with just one out to go.
1927, A HUNNY OF AN EFFORT: Bill Hunnefield continued his hot streak with four hits in the White Sox 9-3 win over Detroit before 6,000 at Comiskey Park. A shortstop, Hunnefield lifted his average to .611 (11-for-18) over the five games with the four-hit game.
1957, BEST SEVEN GAME START IN 37 YEARS: Jim Rivera and Sherm Lollar homered as the Sox defeated the Athletics 4-3 in Kansas City to improve to 6-1 for their best seven-game start since 1920. Paul LaPalme turned in 1.1 innings for the save to preserve Billy Pierce’s second win of the season.
1959, PIERCE FIERCE WITH THE BAT: Winning pitcher Billy Pierce went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple and two RBIs as the White Sox completed the sweep of a doubleheader vs. the Indians with a 5-2 win at Cleveland. Pierce tossed a complete game for his second win. In Game 1, Early Wynn got the win and drove in two runs as part of a six-run fourth in a 6-5 victory.
1960, HAVE A DAY AL SMITH: Al Smith went 5-for-5 and Bob Shaw went the distance in the White Sox 8-0 win at Kansas City. Smith ignited a three-run first with a game-starting homer and fell single shy of the cycle. Shaw held the A’s to five hits in stopping the Sox four-game skid and launching a five-game winning streak.
1964, KREUTZER DOES IT ALL: Frank Kreutzer tossed 5.2 shutout innings of relief and drove in the go-ahead run with a fifth-inning double in the White Sox 2-1 win over Boston before 8,826 at Comiskey Park. Kreutzer gave up three hits and a walk with four strikeouts for his first win. Hoyt Wilhelm finished off Boston with two scoreless innings of relief.
1968, FINALLY A VICTORY: After starting the season with a club-record 10 consecutive losses, the Sox beat the Twins 3-2 at Minnesota. Tommy Davis’ homer in the second inning gave the Sox the lead for good while starter Tommy John got the win and Wilbur Wood earned the save.
1970, HORLEN A DOUBLE THREAT: Joel Horlen fashioned seven strong innings and drove in the eventual winning run in the White Sox 2-0 victory at Cleveland. Horlen, who drove the game’s first run in the second, limited the Indians to three hits in seven innings for his second win. Wilbur Wood turned in two innings for his fourth save. Gail Hopkins was 3-for-3 with a run to lead the Sox nine-hit attack.
1972, SOX PULL OUT AN EPIC: Dick Allen’s two-run homer enabled the Sox walkoff with a 7-5 win in a back-and-forth affair with the Indians before 8,942 at Comiskey Park. The Sox trailed 4-0 but pulled even when Mike Andrews tied it with a grand slam off Ed Farmer in the seventh. The Sox took the lead in the eighth on a Bill Melton single only to have the Indians tie it in the ninth. Allen finally settled it with a dinger in the 10th after Rich Morales had walked with one out. The dramatic win stretched the Sox winning streak to seven after they began 0-3.
1977, OVERTIME TRIUMPH: RBIs by Richie Zisk, Lamar Johnson and a wild pitch helped the White Sox pull out a 10-7 win at Detroit in 14 innings. The Sox took the lead in the 13th on Eric Soderholm’s homer but Detroit tied it in the bottom of the frame. The Sox scored three in the 14th to make a winner out of Lerrin LaGrow, who fired six innings.
1978, A GREAT EIGHTH: Jorge Orta’s lead-providing RBI capped a five-run eighth inning in the White Sox 7-2 win over the Tigers before 7,983 at Comiskey Park. Orta’s RBI came an inning after Eric Soderholm tied the game with a solo homer as the Sox halted a four-game skid. A bases-clearing triple by Chet Lemon in the eighth put the Sox in command and made things easy on Wilbur Wood, who did not allow an earned run in a complete game effort for his first win of the season.
1980, BUNT DOES IT: Mike Squires squeezed home Thad Bosley with the go-ahead run in the 12th inning in the White Sox 8-7 win over the Yankees in New York. Bosley started the inning with a walk, stole second and took third on Bobby Molinaro’s single before Squires came to bat. Ed Farmer got the win and Randy Scarbery earned his first save as the Sox extended their winning streak to four.
1981, 1966 REVISITED: Thanks to Bobby Molinaro’s two-run triple in the seventh, the White Sox improved to 10-3 for the first since 1966 with a 5-4 win in Detroit. Molinaro’s triple scored Lamar Johnson and Chet Lemon to help Britt Burns move to 2-0.
1985, TOM CREEPS CLOSER TO 300: Tom Seaver improved to 2-0 with seven strong innings in the White Sox 4-2 win over the Yankees before 19,174 at Comiskey Park. Seaver gave up five hits and one run with six strikeouts for his 291st victory. Harold Baines’ three-run homer in the sixth put the Sox on top to stay.
1993, FRANK GETS IT GOING: Frank Thomas’ first homer of his first MVP campaign sparked the White Sox 7-0 win over Baltimore before 19,477 at Comiskey Park. Thomas’ homer was a three-run shot in the first off Fernando Valenzuela. Lefties Wilson Alvarez and Scott Radinsky combined on a seven-hitter.
1994, FERNANDEZ WINS IN A HURRY: Alex Fernandez blanked the Milwaukee Brewers in a snappy 2:20 in the White Sox 3-0 win before 23,909 at Comiskey Park. It was Fernandez second win and shutout of the season. The White Sox scored in the second on an RBI by Ozzie Guillen, in the third on an RBI double by Robin Ventura and in the fourth on another RBI by Guillen.
2000, A GRAND DAY FOR THE BIG HURT2000: Frank Thomas hit the sixth grand slam of his career and newcomer Herbert Perry homered in his first start with the club in the White Sox 11-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles before 13,649 at Comiskey Park. Thomas’ grand slam came in the fourth inning and broke open a 5-4 game. Carlos Lee and Perry hit back-to-back homers in the second inning as the surprising Sox won for the sixth time in seven games and improved to 14-7.
2003, POWER SHOW: The White Sox launched four home runs – including two by Magglio Ordonez – in beating Minnesota 7-4 before 25,381 at US Cellular Field. Back-to-back homers by Ordonez and Frank Thomas to start the fourth put the Sox ahead to stay. Carlos Lee also went deep as Jon Garland earned his first win of the season.
2011, THE RIGHT (FIELD) STUFF: Brent Lillibridge made consecutive sterling plays in right field to end the White Sox 3-2 win at New York. Lillibridge’s glovework came with two runners on and in just his seventh career appearance in the position. Gavin Floyd fanned 10 in eight innings to get the win.
2013, A POWERFUL FIFTH: Fifth-inning home runs by Hector Gimenez and Tyler Greene pushed the White Sox past Tampa Bay 5-2 before 20,008 at U.S. Cellular Field. Greene’s blast came two batters after Gimenez homered and gave the Sox the lead for good.
2015, CONOR TO THE RESCUE: Conor Gillaspie’s two-run single gave the Sox the lead for good in a five-run sixth as the White Sox topped the Royals 5-3 before 23,317 at U.S. Cellular Field. John Danks tossed six innings for the win while David Robertson worked the ninth for his third save.
2016, SOX KEEP ROLLING: The White Sox got home runs from Avisail Garcia, Dioner Navarro and Adam Eaton in extending their win streak to five with a 10-1 victory at Toronto. Chris Sale won his fifth straight as the first-place White Sox improved to 15-6.
