*1900, WHITE SOX OPEN SHOP: The White Sox played their inaugural game and lost 7-1 to Connie Mack’s Milwaukee Brewers in a revamped cricket field at 39th and Princeton. As gametime approached, construction crews were applying the final touches to the tiny wooden grandstand. The game drew a crowd estimated at 2,000 to 3,000.
*1930, TRIPLIN’ TED!: Ted Lyons tripled and scored on Ernie Smith’s single to give the White Sox a 3-2 win over St. Louis at Comiskey Park. Lyons gave up one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts in his first start of the season. Willie Kamm pulled the Sox even with a two-run, two-out homer in the seventh.
*1938, UP ON THE ROOF: Hank Greenberg hit the fourth roof-shot home run in Comiskey Park history in the Tigers’ 9-3 victory. Greenberg victimized John Rigney in front of 2,500 on the Southside.
*1947, 3 AND O YES!: Cass Michaels drove in three runs as the White Sox improved to 3-0 with a 6-4 win at Detroit. Luke Appling had three hits and Frank Papish did not allow an earned run in 4.1 innings of relief for the victory.
*1955, SLAMMING THE BENGALS: George Kell’s grand slam capped a five-run third inning in the White Sox 9-1 win at Detroit. In his first start of the season, Mike Fornieles went the distance for his second win of the season.
*1957, 4-0 IN 1957: Sherm Lollar’s sac fly in the 10th lifted the White Sox to a 1-0 win over Kansas City before 8,009 at Comiskey Park. Jim Wilson tossed a three-hitter as the White Sox improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1945 and for only the fourth time in franchise history. The other Sox teams that started 4-0 were in 1920 and 1914.
*1960, BIG KLU COMES THROUGH: Ted Kluszewski’s single in the 11th scored Nellie Fox with the winning run in the Sox 6-5 victory over Kansas City before 9,765 at Comiskey Park. The defending A.L. champs overcame a four-run deficit in the first and eventually tied it in the sixth on Fox’s sac fly. Gerry Staley earned the win with five shutout innings of relief.
.*1961, SOX NIP THE SOX: Minnie Minoso’s sac fly in the eighth scored Luis Aparicio with the go-ahead run as the White Sox nipped Boston 3-2 before 15,560 at Comiskey Park. Minoso’s RBI made a winner out of Cal McLish, who gave up nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the complete game effort.
*1965, MOOSE POWER: Moose Skowron’s two-run home run in the 11th powered the White Sox to a 3-1 win at Fenway Park. John Buzhardt pitched 10 innings and got the win while Eddie Fisher got the final two outs for the save.
*1974, A FIVE-HIT GAME FOR JORGE: Jorge Orta collected the first of his Sox season-record three five-hit games in an 11-7 win over the Royals before 7,890 at Comiskey Park. Two of Orta’s hits came in a seven-run sixth, which allowed the Sox to erase a 6-4 deficit. Orta’s three five-hit games were one shy of the big league record held by Wee Willie Keeler (1897), Ty Cobb (1922) and Stan Musial (1948).
*1981, HELP FROM AN UNLIKELY SOURCE: A ninth-inning error by perennial Gold Glove shortstop Mark Belanger helped the White Sox top Baltimore 2-1 before 10,715 at Comiskey Park. Three batters after Wayne Nordhagen reached on Belanger’s error, Tony Bernazard singled home the winner to hand Britt Burns the victory.
*1985, SOX TOP THE ROCKET: Rudy Law’s RBI single in the seventh gave the White Sox the lead for good in a 7-2 win over the Red Sox and Roger Clemens before before 22,987 at Comiskey Park. Law’s single scored Julio Cruz, who had walked off Clemens to start the frame.
*1987, I AM FROM MILWAUKEE AND MY STREAK IS STOPPED: The White Sox ended the Brewers’ Major League-record tying 13-game win streak to open a season with a 7-1 win at Comiskey Park. Joel Davis was the streak-stopper before a crowd of 17,023, which included a lot of Brewer fans who had made the trip from Wisconsin. Davis fired 5.2 shutout innings for the win while Jim Winn went the rest of the way and allowed a run on three hits for the save.
*1991, THE FIRST WIN AT NEW COMISKEY PARK: Lance Johnson’s walkoff single scored Scott Fletcher with the winner as the White Sox notched their first victory in their new home with a 5-4 triumph of the Detroit Tigers before 29,776 at New Comiskey Park. The White Sox got a huge break in the inning when an error by outfielder Rob Deer allowed Ozzie Guillen to score the tying run. After an intentional walk, Johnson delivered touching off a huge celebration on the field and in the stands. Rookie reliever Brian Drahman was the winning pitcher.
*1999, A SCRAPPY WIN: Ray Durham scored the go-ahead run in the eighth thanks to Mike Caruso’s hard slide into second in the White Sox 2-1 win over Seattle before 8,980 at Comiskey Park. Earlier in the frame, Frank Thomas plated the first run on a fielder’s choice. Bob Howry fanned the side in the ninth to preserve John Snyder’s win.
*2005, LATE CHARGE TAMES TIGERS: Scott Podsednik’s two-run single in the seventh put the first-place White Sox over the top in a 4-3 win at Detroit. Mark Buehrle (3-1) went seven innings for the victory while Shingo Takatsu tossed a perfect ninth for his fifth save as the Sox improved to 12-4 in winning for the fourth straight game.
*2006, WHITE SOX STAY HOT: Jim Thome hit his third home run and the White Sox improved to 11-5 with a 7-1 win over the Twins and Johan Santana before 31,287 at US Cellular Field. Mark Buehrle tossed eight four-hit innings to improve to 3-0 as the Sox won their sixth straight.
*2007, BIG COMEBACK IN DETROIT: A Jermaine Dye double and a Juan Uribe sacrifice fly in the 10th gave the White Sox the lead for good in a 7-5 win in Detroit. The Sox forced extra innings in the eighth on Joe Crede’s run-scoring single, which brought the team all the way back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit. David Aardsma got the win. He struck out the only batter he faced in the ninth and then gave way to Bobby Jenks, who worked a flawless 10th for his sixth save as the Sox won their fourth in a row.
*2012, PERFECT PHLUMBER: Philip Humber pitched the 21st perfect game in history in the White Sox 4-0 win at Seattle. Making his 30th career start, the right-hander fanned nine in joing Charlie Robertson and Mark Buehrle as Sox pitchers to throw perfect games. Paul Konerko’s homer in the second gave the Sox the lead for good.
The gem shocked everyone, including Humber.
“I don’t know what Philip Humber is doing in this list. No idea what my name is doing there, but I’m thankful it’s there,” he said afterward.
*2014, WE LOVE REPLAY: A three-run seventh, bolstered by two replay reviews that went in the White Sox favor, pushed the Southsiders to a 3-1 win at Detroit. Jose Abreu’s double tied it while Dayan Viciedo’s two-bagger gave the Sox the lead in support of John Danks, who pitched into the seventh to move to 2-0.
