*1907, DOUBLE STEAL DOES IT: Fielder Jones scored on the back end of a double steal in the first inning of the White Sox 1-0 win vs. St. Louis at South Side Park. Ed Walsh gave up three hits and fanned two for the victory.
*1929, ANOTHER DECISIVE DOUBLE STEAL: Bill Cissell scored the go-ahead run on the back end of a double steal in the ninth in the Sox 5-4 win – their first of the year — at St. Louis. Homers by Alex Metzler and Buck Crouse highlighted a four-run eighth which tied the game.
*1929, A GEM OF AN OPENER: Ted Lyons fired the White Sox first shutout in a Comiskey Park opener in a 3-0 win over St. Louis. Lyons gave up three hits in posting the Sox first shutout in a home opener since 1910 and the third in team annals.
*1934, MAKING AMENDS: Luke Appling atoned for three errors by driving in the winning run in the ninth in the White Sox 9-8 win over Detroit at Comiskey Park. Appling’s third hit and third RBI came one batter after Zeke Bonura drove in the tying run.
*1938, SUDDEN ENDING: Catcher Tony Rensa threw out a runner trying to steal to end the White Sox 4-3 win over Detroit before 18,000 in the season-opener at Comiskey Park. John “Porkchop” Whitehead pitched into the ninth for the win as the White Sox christened their 38th American League campaign.
*1938, GOOD GROVE: Orval Grove tossed a seven-hitter in the only Opening Day start of his 10-year White Sox career in a 3-1 win over Cleveland before 5,705 at Comiskey Park. Grove walked one and struck out three and got support from Waukegan native Johnny Dickshot, who drove in two runs.
*1945, BIG DAY FOR DICKSHOT: Waukegan’s Johnny Dickshot had four hits and two RBIs in the White Sox 14-6 win at Cleveland. Cass Michaels added three hits and drove in two as the White Sox improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1938.
*1960, WELCOME BACK MINNIE: Minnie Minoso hit a grand slam and a walkoff homer in his return to the White Sox in a 10-9 win over Kansas City before 41,600 on Opening Day at Comiskey Park. Minoso’s slam came in the fourth and his walkoff came a half inning after Kansas City had tied it.
*1966, HOMEWRECKERS: Don Buford drove in Tommie Agee with the go-ahead run in the seventh as the Sox christened Anaheim Stadium with a 3-1 win vs. the Angels. Agee tied the game in the sixth with a solo homer.
*1974, BIG TUB O’ STRIKEOUTS: Terry Forster K’d John Mayberry and Hal McRae to end the White Sox 5-4 win over Kansas City before 9,317 at Comiskey Park. The Sox tied the game in the fourth when Jorge Orta scored on Jerry Hairston’s fielder’s choice. The Sox took the lead for good in the fifth on Orta’s RBI.
*1980, NO. 1 FOR HAROLD: Harold Baines hit his first career home run in the Sox 5-4 win in 12 innings over the Orioles in Baltimore. Baines touched future Hall of Famer Jim Palmer for the first of his 221 Sox homers after Jim Morrison started the seventh with a dinger.
*1985, HAPPY HOME OPENER: The White Sox got homers from Rudy Law, Carlton Fisk, Luis Salazar and Harold Baines in an 8-1 win over Boston before 40,807 in the Comiskey Park opener. Britt Burns gave up six hits and one walk and struck out seven in improving to 2-0.
*1992, STINGY HIBBY: Greg Hibbard extended his career-best scoreless streak to 20.1 innings in beating the Minnesota Twins 4-1 before 24,307 at Comiskey Park. George Bell’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning gave the Sox the lead for good.
*2000, ON TOP TO STAY: Thanks to Carlos Lee’s two-run single in the fifth, the Sox moved into first place for good in the Central with a 5-2 win over Seattle before 8,425 at Comiskey Park. Sean Lowe got the win and Bobby Howry earned the save. Here’s more on this one ….
*2005, TWO GAME LEAD: Orlando Hernandez gave up 10 hits but managed to keep the Twins off the board for six innings for the win in the first-place White Sox 3-1 victory before 18,310 at US Cellular Field. The Sox took the lead in the fifth on RBIs by Joe Crede, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and Scott Podsednik.
*2006, FIRST WIN FOR JAVY: Javier Vazquez pitched into the ninth for his first Sox victory in a 4-0 win over the Royals before 26,327 at U.S. Cellular Field. Vazquez fanned gave up two hits and fanned seven before yielding to Neal Cotts in the ninth.
*2006, BIG POWER: The White Sox got home runs from A.J. Pierzynski, Carlos Quentin and Jim Thome in thumping Tampa Bay 12-2 in Florida. Brian Anderson was 3-for-5 as the Sox pounded out 17 hits to make things easy on winning pitcher Gavin Floyd.
*2016, MAT THE MAN: Mat Latos fired 6.1 shutout innings to improve to 3-0 in the Sox 5-0 win vs. the Angels before 12,093 at US Cellular Field. Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier homered as the Sox moved to 9-5.
*2019, TOP HEAVY: Leury Garcia, Yoan Moncada and Jose Abreu – the top three hitters in the order — each had two hits and two RBI as the Sox topped the Tigers 7-3 in Detroit. Carlos Rodon gave up one run on three hits in six innings for the win to improve to 3-2.
