Happy 16th anniversary to Mark Buehrle’s first No-hitter with the White Sox!
Here’s a look at that game and other memorable events that happened on this date in Sox history:
*1908, THE FIRST OF 40: Ed Walsh posted the first of his club-record 40 victories in the Sox 3-0 win over the St. Louis Browns at South Side Park. Walsh went the distance and struck out four in notching the first of his league-best 11 shutouts.
*1914, 5-0! The Sox improved to 5-0 for the first time with a 5-3 win at St. Louis thanks to Lena Blackburne’s two-run single in the eighth. The Sox added a run later in the frame when Blackburne stole home on the back end of a double steal.
*1941, TED OPENS SUCCESSFULLY: 40-year-old Ted Lyons began his 19th season with a victory in the White Sox 6-3 win over St. Louis in the home opener. Mike Kreevich drove in three as the Sox won their home opener for the first time since 1938.
*1957, HAPPY HARSHMAN HOME START: Jack Harshman homered and got the victory in the Sox 6-2 win over Kansas City before 10,814 in the Comiskey Park opener. Minnie Minoso and Sherm Lollar also went deep for the 2-0 Sox.
*1962, ATTA WAY, RAY: Ray Herbert homered and got the first victory of his All-Star season in the White Sox 3-2 win at Minnesota. Floyd Robinson’s RBI in the sixth was the difference.
*1963, A YEAR LATER, RAY AGAIN: Ray Herbert fired a three-hitter as the Sox blanked the Kansas City Athletics 3-0 before 2,588 at Comiskey Park. Herbert K’d five in the 1-hour and 57-minute affair.
*1964, ALL-AROUND PERFORMER: Gary Peters doubled twice, drove in four and got the win in the White Sox 10-4 victory at Boston. Ron Hansen had three hits and two RBIs as the White Sox improved to 1-3.
*1970, RETURN TO MILWAUKEE: In their first game as a visitor to Milwaukee, the Sox, thanks to a seventh-inning RBI by Ken Berry, overtook the Brewers 8-5 at County Stadium. The Sox were familiar with Milwaukee having played a handful of home games there in 1968 and 1969.
*1972, HAPPINESS AT HOME: Pat Kelly led off the first with a triple and scored on Jorge Orta’s single to ignite the White Sox 14-0 win over Texas before 20,944 in the Comiskey Park opener. Carlos May went 4-for-4, including a three-run homer in a five-run first, with a six RBIs as the Sox posted their biggest win in a home opener.
*1982, 8-0! With rookie Salome Barojas earning his fifth save, the White Sox extended their club-record season-starting win streak to eight with a 6-4 victory over Baltimore before 34,322 at Comiskey Park. The Sox took the lead when Vance Law and Ron LeFlore scored on an error off a double steal in the seventh.
*1990, NO. 1 FOR ROBIN: Robin Ventura clubbed his first big league homer in the Sox 7-5 loss to Boston at Comiskey Park. Ventura’s dinger came in the seventh off Roger Clemens.
*1991, NEW HOME, BAD RESULT: The White Sox opened New Comiskey Park before a crowd of 42,191 on a crisp Thursday afternoon. Dignitaries and many members of the White Sox family past and present watched Detroit score a 16-0 win.
*1994, SOX RAINES HOMERS ON BOSTON: Tim Raines became the ninth player (first switch-hitter) in Sox history to hit three homers in a game in a 12-1 win at Boston on Patriots Day. Raines’ three homer game was the first by a Sox player since Sept. 17, 1982 (Harold Baines).
*2000, 11-RUN FOURTH: A two-run homer by Greg Norton and a three-run shot by Mark Johnson highlighted an 11-run fourth in the Sox 18-11 win over Seattle before 9,898 at Comiskey Park. The 18 runs were the most by the Sox since a 19-run effort vs. Minnesota on Aug. 4, 1992.
*2005, ON TOP TO STAY: Thanks to a pair of homers from Carl Everett, the Sox took over sole possession of first place for good by beating Minnesota 5-4 before 27,018 at US Cellular Field. Everett fronted the Sox for good with a tiebreaking homer in the sixth.
*2007, A NO-HITTER FOR BUEHRLE: Mark Buehrle no-hit Texas in the White Sox 6-0 win over Texas before 25,390 at U.S. Cellular Field. Buehrle walked one and fanned eight in facing the minimum for the 16th no-no in team history. The Rangers’ only baserunner was Sammy Sosa, who walked in the fifth but Buehrle promptly picked him off.
*2015, MOTOWN MASHING: Jose Abreu’s second career grand slam highlighted a seven-run fourth as the White Sox whipped the Tigers 12-3 in Detroit. Chris Sale fanned six in six innings to improve to 2-0.
*2017, BIG WIN IN THE BIG APPLE: Leury Garcia’s homer in the third fronted the White Sox for good in a 4-1 win over the Yankees in New York. Miguel Gonzalez held the Yankees scoreless into the ninth for the victory.
*2021: BEANTOWN SWEEP:,Tim Anderson ignited the White Sox first doubleheader sweep in Boston with a leadoff homer in a 3-2 win in Game 1. The Sox took the nightcap 5-1 thanks to four shutout innings of relief.
