The Boston Red Sox are one of the more disappointing teams this season, but it’s not because they haven’t tried. After losing the Opening Series to the Texas Rangers, they came back to life by winning five straight games. They took the series against the Baltimore Orioles and swept the St. Louis Cardinals in their first home series. This was supposed to be the turning point for the team, and they would get themselves out of that ugly funk they had early on. So far, that hasn’t happened. They have lost six of their last eight, and one of those opponents was the Chicago White Sox.
Some players have been red-hot this season, while others haven’t gotten into their groove yet. Let’s go over who the hottest and coldest Red Sox are to start 2025.
*All stats entering games on April 15
Coldest Red Sox Players
Triston Casas
Casas is the most notably cold member of the Red Sox this season, having been nothing short of abysmal in his first 18 games. He’s posted a .175 batting average while hitting only one home run. He has only 10 hits so far this season while having an OPS of just over .500. He’s slowly getting back to his old self again, but he’s been slumping hard since the start of the new campaign and just lost his cleanup spot to Wilyer Abreu. For someone who was supposed to break out this season, it’s more than disappointing, to say the least.
Jarren Duran
Duran has been disappointing as well, despite his amazing redemption story and his excellent 2023 and 2024 seasons. He’s reverted to his old 2023 stance, and so far, he’s been getting a hit or so a game, but nothing that makes him stand out above the others. He’s striking out far more than he did beforehand, and it’s becoming a concern. However, given how the entire team has faltered offensively so far, that can be excused. Many trust that he’ll get back to form eventually, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen Duran rake like he once did.
Tanner Houck
In a rather surprising turn of events, last year’s All-Star Tanner Houck hasn’t come back just yet. Since his first start this season, he’s been looking like one of the worst pitchers in baseball. He’s posted an ERA over 9.00, giving up 19 earned runs, with some being costly errors in the field. Some WEEI hosts recently speculated that manager Alex Cora may just be getting frustrated with Houck, as he’s played with the team since 2020 and has not been consistent. If this continues, he may just be the odd man out in the rotation, whether by trade or becoming a long reliever.

Hottest Red Sox Players
Trevor Story
Since realizing that Marcelo Mayer has been knocking on his door, Trevor Story has been one of the hottest players since the start of the 2025 season. He hit the first home run at Fenway and has posted a batting average of .304. He’s showing ownership that he’s still got it, and everyone in Boston is loving it. Much to the dismay of Mayer, Story is a Comeback Player of the Year candidate if he stays healthy.
Kristian Campbell
Since making the Opening Day roster, Kristian Campbell has been one of the best hitters in that Red Sox lineup. Posting a .328 batting average and tying the team lead in home runs, he’s more than proven himself to be a franchise cornerstone. His defense at second still needs improvement, but that will come with time. Regardless, with the way he’s been hitting with the stick, there’s no doubt why Boston extended him this fast.
Kristian Campbell, the only player who decided to show up for the Red Sox yesterday, hit his 3rd homer of the season.

Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu has been the best hitter in the Red Sox lineup, and it’s not even close. He’s breaking out before our very eyes, tying Alex Bregman for the team lead in RBI, tying Campbell and Story for in homers, and leading the team in batting average at .333. He’s been so red-hot that he recently moved into the cleanup slot in their lineup. If he keeps this up, the complexion of the roster perception changes significantly. Maybe Roman Anthony won’t be brought up so soon after all.
There has been plenty of hot and plenty of cold with the Red Sox this season. However, it is still April, and there are still over 140 games left to play. If Tanner Houck, Jarren Duran, and Triston Casas can get their old selves back, Boston will have a much easier time. Rafael Devers got out of his, so they can as well.
