New York Mets infielder Nick Madrigal is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a fractured left shoulder. The 27-year-old infielder dislocated his shoulder fielding a ground ball during a split-squad game against the Nationals on Sunday. As he fielded the ball and threw to first, he dove onto the turf and fell on his left arm. The Mets quickly removed him from the game, and manager Carlos Mendoza announced on Monday that an MRI revealed a fracture in his shoulder. Madrigal is just the latest Mets player to be added to the injured list after starters Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas were both ruled out for Opening Day.

A late offseason signing, Nick Madrigal was one of the early favorites to claim a bench spot for New York. Madrigal has spent his entire career in Chicago, playing second and third base between the White Sox and the Cubs. He has never been much of a power hitter, hitting just four home runs in his five-year career, but owns a career .274/.323/.344 batting line. Madrigal is one of the hardest batters to strikeout, striking out in just nine percent of plate appearances, and is a plus defender at multiple infield positions. New York was likely drawn to him because of his ability to play shortstop and his remaining minor league options.
Mets Infielder Nick Madrigal to Undergo Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery
With Madrigal now unlikely to return this year, the Mets will have to decide who their bench infielder will be. Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, and Luisangel Acuña are on the 40-man roster, but there is no clear option at shortstop. Mauricio is recovering from knee surgery, and the Mets would like to give Acuña more time in the minors. While New York hopes to give Baty reps at shortstop during camp, he is not a shortstop. If he were their bench infielder, the Mets would still not have a clear solution to back up Francisco Lindor.

Donovan Walton is also in camp on a minor league deal, but likely would not be a long-term solution. Utility infielders Jose Iglesias and Aledmys Díaz remain available in free agency, but neither would be optionable. Should New York break camp without a backup shortstop, Jared Young could be a candidate to make the Opening Day roster.
