What a wild night at Guaranteed Rate Field, seeing 15 total runs scored in a back-and-forth battle as the Chicago White Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 8–7.
The Ace was on the bump for the Sox but that didn’t matter as the Cardinals hit early and often. St. Louis’ first hit came from Paul Goldschmidt in the first. The Cards first run came in the second as Iván Herrera knocked in Jordan Walker on a sharp line drive. Soon after, Herrera scored as Dylan Carlson hit an RBI single to make it 2–0 heading to the bottom of the second.
Nolan Arenado knocked his 18th home run of the year, his first of two on the evening, to put the Cards up 4–0. The ‘other Nolan’ scored on another Iván Herrera RBI and the boys in red were up 5–0 until the fifth inning.
Starting with a Jake Burger homer, his 19th of the year, the Sox scored in the fifth and sixth inning to take the lead. Featuring RBIs from Andrew Vaughn, Burger and Zach Remillard, quickly the good guys were up 6–5.
The scoring continued as Arenado’s second homer, this time a two-run shot, came along to make it 7–6. Luis Robert, Jr. continued his hot streak and hit a ball out of the park to left field to tying the game 7–7. Cardinals pitcher Kyle Leahy made his MLB debut one to forget, giving up three walks and eventually walking a run in to give the Sox the lead, 8–7.
After Keynan Middleton gave up two runs, Gregory Santos and Kendall Graveman took the hill close things out as the Sox pulled this one out by a score of 8–7.
