The post Report: Skip Schumaker a potential replacement for Pedro Grifol appeared first on Sox On 35th.
Pedro Grifol’s two-year tenure as the manager of the White Sox hasn’t gone well, to say the least. So, to hear that – according to Bob Nightengale – the White Sox are starting to think about replacements isn’t surprising.
In this weekend’s Sunday Notebook, Nightengale once again wrote about Skip Schumaker as a potential replacement for Pedro Grifol heading into the 2025 season for the White Sox.
In his column, he writes the following:
“While Chicago White Sox manager Pedro Grifol’s future is uncertain past this season, one name that is floating around internally as a potential replacement in 2025 is Skip Schumaker, manager of the Miami Marlins. Schumaker, the reigning NL manager of the year, played seven years in St. Louis for Tony La Russa, who will be an integral part of the decision-making process.”

Nightengale has previously written about the White Sox’ willingness to move on from Pedro Grifol following this season – though, a midseason change is unlikely. This isn’t the first time Schumaker’s name has popped up either, as previous reports have connected him to the White Sox – in addition, the White Sox reportedly did interview him during the same cycle in which they hired Grifol.
La Russa’s blessing and connection carries the most weight of anything here, however, considering Schumaker spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Cardinals. The former two-time White Sox manager has been an advisor in the front office since his retirement during the 2022 season, and that is not expected to change any time soon. Schumaker also spent time coaching with both the Padres (first base coach, associate manager) and Cardinals (bench coach) prior to his time with the Marlins. Miami went 84-78 in his first season with the club but have struggled in year two with a change to the front office, currently sitting at 26-50.
As more information becomes available, we will continue to provide updates.
