With the White Sox poised to open the series with the Red Sox tonight, what a better time to look at some more memorable games between these.
Here goes:
*May 30, 1901: The White Sox defeated Boston 8-3 in Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader in the inaugural contest between the American League charter franchises.
*June 17, 1901: The White Sox lost to the Red Sox, then known as the Americans, 11-1 in the first game between the teams in Boston at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds.
*Sept. 9, 1901: The White Sox banged out a club-record six triples in a 6-4 win over Boston in the second game of a doubleheader in Chicago.
*Aug. 17, 1904: The White Sox were no-hit for the first time in a 6-0 loss to Boston and Jesse Tannehill at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston.
*Sept. 27, 1905: The White Sox were no-hit for the second time in their history and by Boston in a 2-0 loss to Bill Dineen at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston.
*Aug. 2, 1906: The White Sox defeated Boston 2-0 at South Side Park to start a club-record 19-game winning streak.
*Aug. 9, 1910: The White Sox defeated Boston 3-1 in the first game between the teams at Comiskey Park. Ed Walsh got the win in relief for the White Sox.
*August 11, 1910: Ed Walsh set a White Sox record with 15 strikeouts in a 1-0 complete game win over Boston at Comiskey Park. The record, which came in a three-hitter, would be tied twice before Jack Harshman broke it against Boston on July 25, 1954.
*May 17, 1912: On the day Fenway Park was dedicated, the White Sox handled the Red Sox 5-2 in the inaugural game between the teams in the Boston park. Ed Walsh was 3-for-3 and earned the win for the Sox.
*May 21, 1915: Boston’s Babe Ruth made his Comiskey Park debut by going 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter against Red Faber in the eighth inning of the White Sox 3-2 win in 17 innings.
*Sept. 21, 1917: The White Sox clinched their second pennant with a 2-1 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Ray Schalk drove in one run and scored the other in support of winning pitcher Red Faber.
*Aug. 4, 1926: Bill Barrett’s inside-the-park grand slam – the first by a Sox player at Comiskey Park — was the difference in a 7-3 win over Boston.
*Aug. 21, 1926: Ted Lyons fired the only no-hitter of his Hall of Fame career in the White Sox 6-0 win at Boston. Lyons fanned two and walked three in facing the minimum. The no-no was one of Lyons’ Sox-record 260 wins and 27 shutouts in his 21-year career.
*June 16, 1936: The Red Sox Jimmie Foxx hit the first of his two Comiskey Park roof shot home runs in the White Sox 4-2 victory. Foxx’s blast came in the fourth inning off Sugar Cain.
*Aug. 2, 1936: The White Sox tied a club-record by overcoming a nine-run deficit in defeating the Red Sox 12-11 in 12 innings in the second game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park.
*Sept. 2, 1937: Boze Berger and Mike Kreevich led off the White Sox 4-2 win over Boston in the first game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. The consecutive game-starting blasts wouldn’t be duplicated by the Sox until July 4, 2000 (Durham, Valentin).
*May 11, 1939: Future Hall of Famer Ted Williams made his Comiskey Park debut in the White Sox 3-2 win over Boston. Williams finished his career with a .296 average, 34 homers and one roofshot home run at Comiskey Park.
*May 14, 1940: Future Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx became the first player to hit two Comiskey Park roof shot home runs in Boston’s 7-6 win over the White Sox. His blast came off Johnny Rigney.
*May 7, 1941: Ted Williams’ launched his only Comiskey Park roof shot home run in Boston’s 4-3 win. Williams’ blast came off Johnny Rigney.
*Sept. 15, 1941: Boston’s Ted Williams’ average stood at .411 after the Red Sox 9-2 win over the White Sox in the first game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. Williams finished the season 13 days later hitting .406.
*Aug.13, 1943: Luke Appling’s collected his 2,000th hit in the White Sox 3-2 win over Boston at Comiskey Park. Appling’s RBI single off Tex Hughson joined him with Eddie Collins as the only Sox players with 2,000 hits.
*May 11, 1949: The White Sox scored in every inning in a 12-9 win over the Red Sox before 3,203 at Comiskey Park. The Sox scored once in the first, second, sixth and seventh, twice in the third and fifth and three in the eighth.
*July 25, 1954: Jack Harshman struck out a still-standing White Sox record 16 batters in a 5-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader at Boston.
*July 14, 1956: Boston’s Mel Parnell no-hit for the White Sox for the first time in 16 seasons. The Red Sox prevailed 4-0 in a night game at Fenway Park
*May 1, 1959: In one of the great individual performances in White Sox history, Early Wynn fired a one-hitter, struck out 14 and homered in a 1-0 win over Boston before 13,022 at Comiskey Park. Wynn gave up a hit to the second Boston batter and then survived seven walks for his third win. Wynn’s homer came leading off the eighth vs. Tom Brewer.
*Sept. 11, 1960: Boston great Ted Williams flied out to centerfielder Jim Landis as a pinch-hitter in his final appearance at Comiskey Park in the White Sox 1-0 win.
*July 22, 1962: Floyd Robinson tied a White Sox record with six hits (all singles) in a 7-3 win at Boston. Robinson’s six-hit game was third in team history and the first since Rip Radcliff on July 18, 1936.
*Aug. 1, 1962: Boston’s Bill Monbouquette no-hit the White Sox at Comiskey Park. Monbouquette walked one and fanned seven in the Red Sox 1-0 victory.
*May 30, 1966: The White Sox posted a doubleheader shutout of the Red Sox at Comiskey Park. John Buzhardt got the win in a 1-0 decision in the opener before Jack Lamabe fired a one-hitter in an 11-0 triumph in the nightcap.
*May 31, 1970: The White Sox outlasted Boston 22-13 at Fenway Park in their best offensive game in 15 years. Walt Williams went 5-for-7 with five runs as the Sox KO’d Boston starter Gary Peters in the first.
*Aug. 19, 1970: The White Sox used their most prolific ninth inning in club history by scoring 11 runs in overtaking the Red Sox 13-5 at Fenway Park. Luis Aparicio capped the outburst with his third RBI of the inning, which featured 10 hits but no home runs.
*Aug. 30, 1970: Mike Andrews, Reggie Smith and George Scott all drove in four as the Red Sox pasted the White Sox 21-11 at Comiskey Park. The 21-runs are tied for the second most given up the White Sox and the most they had yielded since Aug. 9, 1923.
*April 10, 1981: In his return to Fenway Park, Carlton Fisk’s three-run homer in the eighth lifted the White Sox to a 5-3 win over Boston on Opening Day to inaugurate the Jerry Reinsdorf of club ownership.
*July 9, 1988: Dan Pasqua, Greg Walker and Daryl Boston hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning of the White Sox 8-7 win over Boston in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. This marked just the third time in franchise history the Sox hit back-to-back-to-back homers.
*April 17, 1990: Ron Kittle launched the final roof shot home run at old Comiskey Park off Boston’s Rob Murphy in a 2-1 win. The blast, which tied the game, was the last Kittle’s record seven roofers.
*April 16, 1993: In his first at bat as a visitor to Fenway Park, Ellis Burks homered in the second inning of the White Sox 9-4 win over the Red Sox
*April 18, 1994: Tim Raines hit three home runs in the White Sox 12-1 Patriots Day win at Boston. Raines became the first Sox player in 10 years to hit three homers in a game and the first Sox player to accomplish the feat in Fenway Park.
*Sept. 15, 1996: Frank Thomas launched three home runs en route to becoming the Sox career leader in the category in a loss at Boston. Thomas hit all three of his blasts off Tim Wakefield in surpassing Carlton Fisk as the Sox’s all-time home run leader.
*Oct. 4, 2005: The Sox tied a postseason record with five homers in hammering Boston 14-2 in Game 1 of the Division Series at U.S. Cellular Field. A.J. Pierzynski homered twice in the Sox first postseason home win since Game 1 of the 1959 World Series.
*Oct. 5, 2005: Tadahito Iguchi’s three-run homer capped a five-run fifth as the White Sox defeated the Red Sox 5-4 at U.S. Cellular Field to take a 2-0 lead in the A.L. Division Series. Mark Buehrle got the win with Bobby Jenks becoming the second pitcher since 1975 to log a save of six or more outs in his postseason debut.
*Oct. 7, 2005: Orlando Hernandez escaped a bases loaded no out jam in the sixth as the Sox finished off a Division Series sweep of the Red Sox with a 5-3 win at Boston.
*July 9, 2006: The White Sox nipped the Boston Red Sox 6-5 in 19 innings in the longest game ever at New Comiskey Park/US Cellular Field. Tadahito Iguchi ended the 6-hour and 19-minute affair with an RBI single that scored Alex Cintron. *July 17, 2012: In his second game at Fenway Park as a visitor, former Red Sox slugger Kevin Youkilis’ three-run homer in the fourth fronted the White Sox for good in a 7-5 win.
*June 8, 2018: Dylan Covey outdueled Chris Sale in starting and winning just the fifth White Sox 1-0 victory at Fenway Park. Covey fanned seven in six innings and was put in position to win thanks to Trayce Thompson’s RBI in the seventh. Sale took the loss in his second start against the White Sox.
