Highly touted baseball agent Scott Boras spoke to the media at Wednesday’s general managers meeting in San Antonio. Boras discussed the situation about many of his clients, including third baseman Alex Bregman. The free agent underwent a procedure to remove a bone chip from his right elbow. The surgery, which took place on Wednesday, is expected to have a minimal impact on Bregman’s 2025 season availability. Despite this setback, Bregman remains highly coveted. His stellar career with the Houston Astros, marked by multiple World Series championships, continues to drive interest.
Alex Bregman Has Bone Chip Removed from Elbow
Boras said that Bregman is on track to resume swinging a bat “in a few weeks” and hinted he will be at full strength for spring training. Bregman underwent a similar arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from the same elbow after the 2018 season. He played the final month and a half of the season with what he described as “gremlins” in his right elbow. The Astros Astros held Bregman out of a mid-August series against the Chicago White Sox due to elbow swelling, requiring daily monitoring of his availability thereafter.
Bregman finished the year with a .768 OPS and an American Gold Glove at third base. Scouts and analysts rank him as the second or third-best position player on the free-agent market, trailing only Juan Soto and Willy Adames.
On Tuesday, Astros general manager Dana Brown called retaining the two-time All-Star the team’s “biggest priority” this offseason. Both sides had a series of “productive” conversations over the last few weeks.
“They clearly understand the rarity of being in four World Series. That and being in the postseason eight years in a row and him being a centerpiece of that,” Boras said.
“They’ve certainly measured to me throughout the process they’re actively engaged. As to meeting markets and the demand of this kind of player, you just don’t have many players on the dirt that do what he does. Also that Bregman can play second base, third base, his leadership- it’s a market certainly that the Astros are very aware is very healthy for him.”
