It was a pitcher’s duel from the first pitch of the game. Mike Clevinger tossed 7.0 innings giving up only three hits and fanning seven. The Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning then allowed two hits, which is all the Sox needed to get going.
Luis Robert Jr. knocked the first hit of the night for the Sox with his 35th double of the season on a sharp line drive to left field. Yoán Moncada then launched a 2-run homer for the lead!
In the top of the eighth, Yasmani Grandal got the offense going with a single to center field and Oscar Colás followed suit with a double to right field. Tim Anderson would draw a walk for Andrew Benintendi to knock his 200th career double with the bases loaded, driving in Grandal and Colás. Eloy Jiménez kept the momentum going with a single to right field to score Anderson and move Benintendi to third. Yoán Moncada singles to right field to bring home Benintendi and put the Sox up by 6.
The Sox defense and pitching kept the Tigers scoreless. The infield would turn three double plays and pitchers Mike Clevinger, Lane Ramsey and Bryan Shaw would only allow three hits.
