Minnie Miñoso Academy — formerly McClellan Elementary School — celebrated the announcement of its new name and the start of a new school year with a back-to-school bash on August 17. Students and families enjoyed music, food, games, and other activities, including an appearance by Chicago White Sox mascot Southpaw. The late Chicago White Sox Hall of Fame legend, Minnie Miñoso, was a seven-time Major League Baseball and two-time Negro Leagues All-Star who broke the organization’s color barrier as the first Black Hispanic player in 1951. Miñoso’s son, Charlie, welcomed students and faculty to the Miñoso family during the bash. Scroll below to catch a glimpse at the event.
