A Merrillville woman pled guilty to reckless homicide on Monday — the day her murder case was set to go to trial.
Alexis Sanders, 26, initially was charged with murder for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend — 30-year-old Dominique Davis of Gary — in the torso on Oct. 19, 2022.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Sanders will plead guilty to reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, which carries a possible sentence of one-to-six years in prison, in exchange for prosecutors dropping the murder charge. The advisory sentence is three years, according to court records.
Judge Salvador Vasquez will take the agreement under advisement, and a sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.
The victim’s mother later told police Davis was planning to break up with her.
Originally, Sanders claimed that Davis was stabbed in a confrontation when her recent Tinder hookup showed up unexpectedly.
When police obtained the Ring video, it painted a different picture.
“You stabbed me!” Davis said as he begged Sanders to call 911.
“Please … I’ll tell them somebody else did it … I’m gonna de. Help please, I can’t breathe … why, Alexis? Why?”
While Sanders called 911, she claimed to google how to help. Investigators found no search.
After his death, Sanders searched on the internet for several things on Oct. 19 to 20, including “murder defense lawyer Merrillville,” records show.
Investigators alleged she was a serial abuser. She was previously arrested in Miami-Dade County in Florida for battery and domestic battery, records show.
Merrillville cops were called in May 2019 for a domestic call with a different man.
Davis had previously called the cops on April 12, 2022 after she hit him with a piece of wood. He didn’t want to press charges.
