The White Sox have continued to shuffle their roster.
Prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays, the White Sox made four roster moves:
- Called up RP Prelander Berroa
- Called up SP Brad Keller
- Optioned SP Jonathan Cannon to Triple-A Charlotte
- Designated RP Deivi Garcia for Assignment
Berroa, 24, came over to the White Sox as part of this offseason’s Gregory Santos trade with the Seattle Mariners. In 11.1 innings in Charlotte this season, Berroa has an 8.74 ERA – however, this has largely been skewed by a rough start to the season, as he has posted seven consecutive scoreless outings. On the season, he has struck out 13 hitters and walked nine.
Keller, 28, is a former Royal who made his way to the South Side this offseason. He is 38-53 in his career with Kansas City, posting a 4.27 ERA in 679 career innings, mostly as a starter. In 16 innings with Charlotte to start the year, he was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He will presumably take Jonathan Cannon’s spot in the rotation, as he struggled in two of his first three career starts. Cannon was the starter for game two of the series against Tampa Bay on Saturday night, giving up four runs (and two home runs) in five innings of work.
Garcia, 24, was given another chance with the White Sox after struggling with the Yankees. However, a lack of command brought down what was typically a strong arsenal from Garcia. In 14 games this season, Garcia posted a 7.07 ERA. It would not be surprising if he cleared waivers and remained with the White Sox, however, another team may take a chance on re-working a player with good stuff despite the poor results.
